I may have missed Pope Leo at the Stade de France in Paris last weekend but I got to meet and chat with the Popess of American Art, Wanda Corn, after presenting my paper at the ninth biennial symposium of @ahaaamericanart!

Here are 20 highlights from last week’s three-day conference in Maine. For more photos and details, check out my full coverage of the symposium on @ahaaamericanart’s accounts. I am so grateful to serve on the AHAA board and to have been a social media coordinator for 2.5 years now.

Thank you to the steering committee, AHAA, and all the wonderful participants - and the friends I met/made there! - who made this symposium so special

After the PMA discussion, we joined Mary Louise Schumacher @marylouises (executive director) and Danielle Yovino @daniellelyovino (curator) for a reception at the Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Foundation @therabkinfoundation. The foundation is a destination gallery for the work of Leo Rabkin (1919-2015), the longtime president of the American Abstract Artists group and an artist known for color-saturated watercolors and inventive box construction.
Appetizers and a signature mocktail/cocktail inspired by Rabkin’s work were served.

2025 I ran away from NY. Said goodbye to my childhood home. Ate some yum cha in Hong Kong. Photographed on different sets. Sold some art in London. Booked hotels for wrong dates. And made some new friends in Melbourne ❤️

Exhibition Statement: “Portals Into our Future” invites us to lean into our senses—to marvel, meditate, float, dream, revel, reflect, and commune—to meander from one artist’s universe to another—as they make visible the possibilities that live in the in-between spaces. The sovereignty of each particular voice, centering their individual creative power and striving to know themselves in the context of the world around them, is the heartbeat of why a community arts center like Waterfall Arts exists. It’s the reason why supporting art and art-making are imperative even in all times, especially the difficult ones.

Tomorrow afternoon! An Open House celebrating 25 years of @waterfallarts AND we fling the doors wide on the show @ashleypage.studio and I have been working on for over a year with twenty five incredible artists.

“Portals Into Our Future” invites us to lean into our senses—to marvel, meditate, float, dream, revel, reflect, and commune—to meander from one artist’s universe to another—as they make visible the possibilities that live in the in-between spaces. The sovereignty of each particular voice, centering their individual creative power and striving to know themselves in the context of the world around them, is the heartbeat of why a community arts center like Waterfall Arts exists. It’s the reason why supporting art and art-making are imperative in all times, and especially the difficult ones. If viewers allow themselves the opportunity to be present and attuned with the art, moved by the art, disrupted by the art, and changed by the art, they can see in themselves something that might not already exist.

Open House
Saturday June 28, 4-7pm
Exhibit dates June 28 - August 22

As @lunderinstitute wraps up the first week of our Summer Think Tank centering Indigenous artists and art histories, we are filled with gratitude for the generosity of our guests, including Ann Pollard-Ranco (@pessesemowihke), Maya Tihtiyas Attean (@mayatihtiyasart), Natani Notah (@nataninotah), Jared Lank (@jaredlank), Lokotah Sanborn (@apocekenawatepess), Ramey Mize (@rameymize), Kale Sapiel (@kmsappy), and Danikah Chartier (@danikahchartier).

Our week's program included dialogue with our partners, a trip to @colbymuseum, and a delicious dinner provided by Chef Louis Pickens (@blackbettysbistro), our Chef-in-Residence for this session. Chef Pickens took inspiration for the meal from Romare Bearden's "Cotton," a work in @colbymuseum's collection. Our weekly supper clubs provide an opportunity for think tank guests to connect with other members of our community; this week, we were joined by Abby Lank (@aabbyylou), Kendall DeBoer (@silkyjuicy), Jillian Impastato (@spilljill), and Teresa McKinney (@teri.ology).

Although Summer Think Tank conversations are not open to the general public, each discussion is recorded and will be preserved in our oral history archive for future access. But follow along with weekly updates here and stay tuned for more information about next week's guests!
