History I was never taught in my Oklahoma History Class-
Aug.19, 1958 (65 years ago today)
13 members of the OKC NAACP Youth Council and teacher, Clara Luper occupied seats at the Katz Drug Store in downtown OKC and ordered a hamburger & coke. When denied service, the students remained seated in a peaceful protest. After three days of the student sit-ins, Katz agreed to serve the students! This sit-in led to numerous other demonstrations at lunch counters, cafeterias, churches, amusement parks, marches, voter registration drives, and boycotts in the state and around the country!

On August 19, 1958, my grandmother was 15 years old. She and her friends courageously went to Katz Drug Store and sat on the counter stools until they were served a hamburger & coke.
In the second picture, you see my Grandmother CJ, and her best friend protesting at Katz.

65 years ago, Black people were allowed to drink from colored only fountains, get their food in brown paper sacks in the back of restaurants, and only go to schools that were allowed for black students. Black people weren’t even allowed to try on shoes at a retail store and had to wear whatever size the clerk gave them.

I fight against injustices because it’s in my blood. I fight against inequities because so many people before me fought tooth and nail to allow me to have the freedoms I have today. I fight because I love good trouble and there’s so much more work that still needs to be done.

I am thankful for the bravery of my Grandmother CJ, I am thankful for the leadership of Clara Luper, I am thankful to those that fought the good fight, and I’m thankful to those who are still fighting.

My Grandmother Pullen created my love for baking! She taught me how to do it from scratch and with love. I absorbed everything I could while being in the kitchen with her. My grandmother still bakes with me til this day. It’s my favorite things to do with her. She doesn’t remember the steps, she asks me after every step if we added something we already have, and we move much slower. But while we’re baking she is constantly asking me who taught me how to bake. I happily respond that it was her and she replies then these must be some really good cookies!

I am proud to announce that I have obtained my Master’s Degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma.

In the 15 month duration of OU’s intense graduate studies, I also started a new relationship, transitioned to a higher leadership role in my career, and completely paid for school out of pocket. There was so much of life I was maneuvering through while I was being a grad student.
Tears were shed heavily, stress was endured constantly, and an extensive amount of 10 page papers in APA format were typed bi-weekly.

This was easily the hardest obstacle I have ever faced in all my 30 years of living. The push this degree made me evolve in mentally, emotionally, and physically was tremendous. I have never been more proud of myself. I set my mind and energy to it and I achieved it! I graduated with a 4.0 too! Thank you to my man, my friends, and my family for helping me get through it! Let’s get across this stage and graduate 👩🏽‍🎓

Year 3 as Events and Engagements Chair for ANMF

We hosted 20 different engagements for our expected 80,000 participants. How fulfilling, tiring, stress inducing, and rewarding. Thankful for my EE team and family, we got it DONE! Proud of the work, proud to get people connected to community. We’ll see yall next year!

Freedom Fiesta 2026

A time to honor, celebrate, and bring awareness to Clara Luper and the OKC sit-inners. During this 68th anniversary of the OKC Sit-ins, I reflect on the progress that the city and nation has made and the amount of work that still needs to be done in the big 2026. Being the youngest on the committee and listening to the wisdom of everyone around me, I’m always in awe that the fight hasn’t withered within any individual on that committee. The freedoms that I have as a black woman in 2026, I never want to take for granted.

This is why you will always see me at the polls every opportunity to vote, proudly saying my thoughts and opinions on any and all platforms, and getting connected in the community to make sure I have a seat that the table. To have my Grandmother CJ being celebrated for her bravery as a young girl is something I’m always going to treasure forever.

It is my third year to be on the committee and first year to create an inaugural event at freedom fiesta. Thank you to my Freedom Fiesta in the park Committee, without you my vision wouldn’t have came to life.
