M F A — So proud to have worked with some amazing teachers at @wilsoncollegemfa (especially my mentor @joshua_legg_mfa) who have helped me connect to my artistic practice, ignite my spirit of inquiry, and who have supported me in pursuing the range of my artistic interests. Congrats to the rest of my cohort and much merde to those working toward their thesis this year. by @dankarasik

My time at @confluenceballetco was short and it is still really hard to accept. What I found there was a power dynamic that I feel stood not only in stark contrast with the company’s mission statement, but against my personal values — I was used and let go, and realize now that to remain there I would have contradicted my original post below. ⁣
⁣
I was called names, made to feel that volunteer hours were a symbol of loyalty, and had my personal life brought into my professional periphery, which is unethical and deeply manipulative. Unfortunately, I believe expressing my feelings to my boss about this was perceived as a threat to their power. When this person declared themself as my “superior,” it became clear that their words were meant to bend me to their will. ⁣
⁣
My hope in editing my post is not to harm @confluenceballetco but rather to shine a light on the unfortunate realities that exist in the ballet world. Having a mission that revolves around “diversity and inclusion” was a major factor in my deciding to work there. But unless there is an environment that is free from harmful power dynamics, diversity—in discourse and dancers— becomes an idea, not a reality.
—————————————————————
This fall I’m excited for a new opportunity — I will be working with @confluenceballetco as Resident Choreographer and Rehearsal Director for their 2021-22 season. Many of you know that I take great issue with the power dynamic that is associated with ballet, as well as its Eurocentric, elitist, and racist past. In supporting the mission and vision of Artistic Director @courtenpointe I’m so proud to be a small part of the change I feel so deeply about.

Confluence Ballet Company will be starting its first season this fall, and I’m so thrilled to be working with the incredible dancers that make up the company. I will be creating new works throughout the season.

I will also ask humbly that you consider a donation toward the upcoming season. Your contribution not only ensures the security of the company into the future, but is a vote for change in bringing the classical beauty of ballet to the community. #confluenceballet #confluenceballetco #dance #ballet by @dankarasik

G R A T E F U L is an understatement — I can’t believe I get to share my first film today. @portabellla @maddiekucensky and @jsinks0 are absolutely stunning and I promise each of them will break your heart. @danmac429 wrote a brilliant score, and @thespaceupstairs was amazing to host us. What an amazing privilege to explore film with @portabellla @jsinks0 @maddiekucensky and to give a much needed update to a classical ballet narrative.

Le Spectre de la Rose is the story of the freedom of releasing ourselves from our tethers. It is set to new music by the brilliant @danmac429

I’m not quite sure how I’ll fill the space in my heart left by these dancers now that this performance is over, but I do feel better knowing they’re about to rock another audience’s world really soon. And how about the voice of @christia_michael — just so beautiful. Costumes by the amazing @dancedresser66❤️. by @dankarasik
