🇬🇧: Israel between the Six Days War and the Yom Kippur War (1967 - 1973)

•~•~•~

🇬🇧: 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: In the 1960s, relations between Israel and its Arab neighbors in the Middle East were generally bad, constantly on a war footing. The efforts of Jordan, Syria, and Egypt in supporting various revolutionary groups such as the PLO culminated in several Israeli war actions between 1966 and 1967, providing one of the casus belli of the war along with the blocking of some passes with Egypt. Gamal Abd el-Nasser, president of Egypt, underestimated (wrongly) the power of Israel, which was considered inferior to that of Egypt and other Arab countries such as Syria, so once the Six-Day War broke out, he saw the forces of Israel's neighbors defeated, conquering the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank and the Golan Heights from Syria. The State of Israel changed the structure of the Middle East in a few days, extending from the Golan Heights to the Suez Canal, intending to keep these territories, hoping for the support of the USA, which however did not happen, pushing for a temporary maintenance of the occupied territories until a just and lasting peace was reached between the parties (this according to UN Resolution 242).
This structure lasted until the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

🗺️ Europe in 1919: The Aftermath of a Global War

The year 1919 marked a dramatic turning point in European history. The First World War had just ended, leaving behind a shattered continent and four fallen empires: the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, German, and Russian. Out of their ruins, a new political map emerged, one shaped by the Treaty of Versailles and other postwar agreements.

New nation-states appeared across Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland, Czechoslovakia, Finland, the Baltic states, and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). Existing borders were redrawn, often without regard to ethnic or linguistic realities, creating tensions that would persist for decades.

The map of 1919 reflects both the hopes of national self-determination and the seeds of future conflict. It was a fragile peace built on compromise, idealism, and unresolved grievances.

North America in 1849

The Mexican-American War had just ended (1848), redrawing borders and adding vast western lands to the U.S., including California, Utah, and New Mexico. Tensions over slavery in new territories were rising fast.

💰 Gold Rush Fever
In 1849, tens of thousands of fortune-seekers—the '49ers—rushed to California after gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in 1848. This explosive migration transformed San Francisco from a sleepy port to a booming city almost overnight.

🚂 Railway Expansion
Railroads were surging. While the Transcontinental Railroad was still two decades away, local lines were already stitching together the eastern states, accelerating commerce and migration westward.

🧭 Discovery & Settlement
Explorers, settlers, and Indigenous peoples were in constant collision. The Oregon Trail was alive with covered wagons. The U.S. was driven by the belief in Manifest Destiny—the idea that it was the nation’s fate to span the continent.

🗺️ Canada & Mexico
In the north, Canada was still a patchwork of British colonies, slowly progressing toward confederation. In the south, Mexico reeled from territorial losses and internal unrest, entering a period of political instability.

A year of gold, grit, and growing pains—1849 shaped the map and mindset of a continent.

🇮🇹 Where was Italian spoken in 1940?
Beyond Italy’s borders, Italian was alive in many corners of Europe and North Africa 🌍:

🔸 Majority-speaking cities: Parenzo, Rovigno, Pola, Zara – all vibrant Italian-speaking hubs in Istria and Dalmatia.
🔸 Historical minorities: Italian communities thrived in Tunis 🇹🇳, Cattaro 🇲🇪, and parts of Corsica and Nice 🇫🇷.
🔸 Official but minority use:
• 🇦🇱 Italian Albania
• 🇨🇭 Canton Grisons and Ticino (Switzerland)
• 🇬🇷 Italian Dodecanese Islands
• 🇮🇹 South Tyrol (despite a German-speaking majority)

Italian wasn't just a national language, it was a cultural bridge across regions and peoples. 🗺️✨

🇮🇱✈️ Israel Launches Coordinated Strikes on Iran: What the Map Shows
In the past hours, Israel carried out a large-scale air operation deep inside Iran, hitting over 100 strategic targets including nuclear facilities, missile bases, and IRGC compounds. Confirmed casualties include high-ranking Iranian generals and nuclear scientists linked to weapons development.

Iran launched more than 100 drones in response — nearly all intercepted by Israel’s advanced air defense systems. No major damage reported on Israeli territory.

🛑 Iranian and regional airspace closed
📉 Major flight disruptions
🛢 Oil and gold prices spike
⚠️ Iran calls it a “declaration of war”

This marks one of the most decisive demonstrations of Israeli military reach and deterrence in recent years.

Seen from above the North Pole, NATO reveals its true geographic unity: a ring of nations spanning Europe and North America, bound by shared values of democracy, freedom, and mutual defense. 🌍

Created in 1949 in the early shadows of the Cold War, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was more than just a military pact. It was a bold declaration: an attack on one is an attack on all. This principle has only been invoked once, in defense of the United States after the 9/11 attacks.

Through the decades, NATO stood firm against the threat of Soviet communism, deterring expansion and preserving peace across Western Europe without a single shot fired on Alliance soil during the Cold War. This balance of power, many argue, prevented World War III.

🧠 Curiosity: The reason NATO headquarters are in Brussels? After France withdrew from NATO’s military command in 1966, Belgium offered a new home, a symbolic and strategic heart of Europe.

Even today, with new global challenges, NATO continues to adapt, welcoming new members from Eastern Europe and beyond, proof of its enduring relevance.

This map doesn’t show battles or borders, it shows geography turned into alliance. From the Arctic to the Mediterranean, from Alaska to the Baltics, NATO remains the backbone of Western collective defense.

As of mid-2024, the geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe remains complex and fluid, with various countries and regions experiencing significant tensions and challenges.

Ukraine continues to face ongoing conflict with Russia, particularly in its eastern regions. Despite efforts at peace negotiations, fighting persists, leading to significant humanitarian and economic challenges. The West, particularly NATO and the EU, continues to support Ukraine with military aid and sanctions against Russia.

Serbia maintains a delicate balance between its aspirations for EU membership and its traditional ties with Russia. Tensions with Kosovo remain unresolved, occasionally flaring up and causing regional instability. Serbia's relationships with neighboring Balkan countries are cautiously managed to avoid escalating conflicts.

Belarus, under President Alexander Lukashenko, remains closely aligned with Russia, especially after the 2020 protests against his disputed re-election. The country has faced Western sanctions but continues to receive economic and military support from Moscow. Belarus' domestic situation remains tense, with a strong security apparatus maintaining control.

Georgia continues its pro-Western trajectory, seeking closer ties with NATO and the EU. However, it faces significant challenges due to Russian influence and the unresolved status of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which are supported by Russia. Internal political dynamics also add to the complexity, with periodic protests and political instability.

Iran's influence in Eastern Europe is more indirect, often acting through proxy relationships and economic ties. Its primary focus remains the broader Middle East, but its interactions with countries like Armenia and its stance on issues involving Russia and Turkey have regional implications.

The geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe is marked by ongoing conflicts, shifting alliances, and significant external influences from Western powers and Russia. The region remains a hotspot for geopolitical tension, with local dynamics intertwined with broader international strategies and rivalries.

The Breitspurbahn, a visionary railway project born during the Nazi era, aimed to redefine transportation in Germany with its audacious plans and train designs. Central to its vision were locomotives of unprecedented power, pulling 8-axle double-floor carriages that stretched an imposing 42 meters in length, 6 meters in width, and 7 meters in height. These colossal trains were not merely modes of transportation; they were lavish mobile palaces equipped with an array of amenities.

The proposal outlined plans for passenger carriages featuring Dutch doors with retractable staircases, leading into a world of opulence and comfort. Inside, travelers would find themselves immersed in luxury, with facilities including a restaurant, theatre, swimming pool, barbershop, and sauna. The entire train, spanning approximately 500 meters (1,640 ft) in length, was designed to accommodate between 2,000 and 4,000 passengers, all while hurtling across the tracks at speeds reaching 200 kilometers per hour (120 mph).

The Breitspurbahn's grand ambition extended beyond the confines of Germany (Großdeutschland), with proposed routes reaching international destinations such as Vienna, Prague, Paris, Rome, Moscow and Baku. According to other sources, the planned routes where even more insane, with routes going into Spain, Africa, and even Vladivostok in Russia and the Bering strait.
This expansive network promised to revolutionize transportation, fostering economic integration and cultural exchange on a scale previously unimaginable.

Despite meticulous planning and substantial investment, the Breitspurbahn never progressed beyond the conceptual stage. The outbreak of World War II and logistical challenges halted its development, consigning the project to the annals of history as an unrealized dream. Yet, the legacy of the Breitspurbahn endures as a testament to the ambition of German engineering, inspiring awe and fascination to this day.

In 1946, following World War II, the Soviet Union consolidated its control and influence over various territories. This expansion included Eastern European countries like Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, northern Austria (until 1955), Yugoslavia (until 1948), Albania (until 1968) and East Germany, where Soviet-backed communist governments were established. Additionally, the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania remained under Soviet control as republics within the USSR. The Soviet Union also occupied the Kuril Islands, formerly controlled by Japan, and annexed parts of Eastern Prussia, reshaping the geopolitical dynamics of Europe.

Furthermore, Soviet Union extended its influence beyond Europe. After World War II, the Soviet Union occupied Manchuria, a region in northeastern China, as part of the agreement made with the Allies to fight against Japan.
In addition to Manchuria, the Soviet Union occupied North Korea following the defeat of Japanese forces in Korea. The northern part of the Korean Peninsula fell under Soviet control, laying the groundwork for the establishment of a communist regime in North Korea.

Also Mongolia, which had been under Soviet influence since the early 1920s, continued to function as a satellite state of the Soviet Union, maintaining close political, economic, and military ties with Moscow. Mongolia effectively operated as a Soviet-backed puppet regime during this period.
