“The 15-year-old labrador, Tulu, is resting at my feet as I chat with Renuka and @dannyvsram in their home. Each visit to their home has been as inviting as the previous — the door has, on every occasion, been left open. The three-storey apartment is as homely as it gets: A large dining table sits beside a kitchen with familiar aromas wafting from it, bunches of chargers sit atop ornamental chests, and a few fine strands of dog hair follow you in all rooms. The couple has spent 40-odd years travelling the world together, and the life they’ve built is showcased not simply in the affection they share, but peculiarly in the objects peppered around their home.

Danny worked in the United States in finance, and Renuka in education. The former is renowned for his 1,500-strong carpet collection — largely from the Silk Route, and some from South America, Africa, Europe, and Oceania — a number that was once nearly its double. The central-Bengaluru home is adorned with these masterpieces wherever you lay your eyes. Renuka, on the other hand, had been an educationist and reading specialist, and began collecting children’s books for her classes — a fondness that has now grown into a collection of over 2,000 books. The space reflects a long process of bringing things back, living with them, and allowing them to take on new meaning over time.”

Talking to people and learning their stories is one of life’s greatest joys. With @dannyvsram and his family, it’s the easiest thing to do. These are my closing words from ‘Treasures of a Shared Life’ — a story that opens @svasalife’s latest issue, The Stay. The issue finds itself between the tension of movement and familiarity. The story is about their travels around the world, and how it shaped the home they’ve built today. It’s simple, and it’s joyous. If you’d like a copy, please DM 🩷 by @dannyvsram

An evening that reveals a deeply personal world shaped over decades.

Danny Mehra opens his Bangalore home and the inner sanctum of his extraordinary carpet collection to a small circle of ILC members

This walkthrough with Danny and Renuka allows the carpets to unfold as quiet storytellers. Woven across the Caucasus and Central Asia, these pieces were once part of everyday nomadic life - laid out in homes, carried across journeys, used, worn, and lived with. Over time, they’ve travelled continents, but they still hold on to where they began.

Look closely, and the details begin to surface - a motif that once symbolised protection, a pattern that marked a personal milestone, colours drawn from the earth itself. Nothing is accidental. Everything has meaning.

There’s a certain calm in experiencing something like this. You slow down, you observe, and you begin to appreciate how much thought, care, and life can exist within something as simple as a woven surface.

At ILC, there’s a growing intent to create more of these textured, thoughtful encounters - moments that gently shift perspective and open up new ways of seeing. This experience with Danny is one such instance – an invitation into worlds shaped by craft, memory, and time.

April 24 is also a special day for the Mehra family. It marks the birthday of Tulu, and the birth anniversary of Luri.
