“The 15-year-old labrador, Tulu, is resting at my feet as I chat with Renuka and @dannyvsram in their home. Each visit to their home has been as inviting as the previous — the door has, on every occasion, been left open. The three-storey apartment is as homely as it gets: A large dining table sits beside a kitchen with familiar aromas wafting from it, bunches of chargers sit atop ornamental chests, and a few fine strands of dog hair follow you in all rooms. The couple has spent 40-odd years travelling the world together, and the life they’ve built is showcased not simply in the affection they share, but peculiarly in the objects peppered around their home.

Danny worked in the United States in finance, and Renuka in education. The former is renowned for his 1,500-strong carpet collection — largely from the Silk Route, and some from South America, Africa, Europe, and Oceania — a number that was once nearly its double. The central-Bengaluru home is adorned with these masterpieces wherever you lay your eyes. Renuka, on the other hand, had been an educationist and reading specialist, and began collecting children’s books for her classes — a fondness that has now grown into a collection of over 2,000 books. The space reflects a long process of bringing things back, living with them, and allowing them to take on new meaning over time.”

An evening that reveals a deeply personal world shaped over decades.

Danny Mehra opens his Bangalore home and the inner sanctum of his extraordinary carpet collection to a small circle of ILC members

This walkthrough with Danny and Renuka allows the carpets to unfold as quiet storytellers. Woven across the Caucasus and Central Asia, these pieces were once part of everyday nomadic life - laid out in homes, carried across journeys, used, worn, and lived with. Over time, they’ve travelled continents, but they still hold on to where they began.

Look closely, and the details begin to surface - a motif that once symbolised protection, a pattern that marked a personal milestone, colours drawn from the earth itself. Nothing is accidental. Everything has meaning.

There’s a certain calm in experiencing something like this. You slow down, you observe, and you begin to appreciate how much thought, care, and life can exist within something as simple as a woven surface.

At ILC, there’s a growing intent to create more of these textured, thoughtful encounters - moments that gently shift perspective and open up new ways of seeing. This experience with Danny is one such instance – an invitation into worlds shaped by craft, memory, and time.

April 24 is also a special day for the Mehra family. It marks the birthday of Tulu, and the birth anniversary of Luri.

Lots of romance in these antique finds. A walk into @dannyvsram 's studio is like a trip into Alibaba's cave. Walls lined with the most beautiful carpets and rugs and piles of the same on the floor. I was transported into a mesmerising world. The added joys are the stories he attaches to them. I recently acquired this gorgeous felt horseback cover from towards the end of the Ottoman period dated to the turn of the 19th century from him. Its dyed red , likely madder root based. It retains it's natural patina from tribal use. The embellishments were added along its life. These were done mark special celebrations like the birth of a child or a wedding. It may have also been a prayer mat. Early Anatolian felt horseback covers, rooted in the nomadic traditions of Central Asia, were essential, durable, and multifunctional textiles used by Turkic tribes. These items, often made from thick, felted lamb’s wool, served as saddle blankets to protect the horse's back from the chafing of wooden saddles, as well as protective covers to shield the horse and its equipment from cold and moisture. Felt was the oldest textile known to man made by pressing wool Felt making continues in Anatolian provinces like Afyon, Konya, and Kars, with the traditional "kepenek" still being utilized for both shepherds and their horses in Eastern Anatolia.Due to their functional, high-wear nature and organic material, few extremely old felt horse covers have survived from the early Anatolian period.
On another note as I sit in front of it, a thousand stories go on in my head. Touching it gives me goosebumps on who would have sat on it The dents and the welts tell a tale. A handsome lighteyed Turk with piercing eyes, a sword in his hand a leather saddle bag on the side, racing on a handsome steed, its mane flying in the wind.....I could go on and on. Collecting timeless classics is an absolute high! And also, did someone say that a pop of red wakes up a room and this is the year of the 'Horse'. Swipe pls.
