5 people measures were tested against profit. The one most owners actually collect came last. Swipe for the order.

Researchers pooled 134 studies published between 1993 and 2023, covering 721,826 observations, to test whether the 4 areas of the balanced scorecard really feed each other. They found learning and growth is the cornerstone of the whole model.

Underneath that headline sits the more useful detail. Of the people measures tested against financial performance, motivation and knowledge sharing tracked it most closely. Staff satisfaction tracked it least closely.

Three caveats. That ranking is my reading of the reported figures, and the authors did not test whether the gaps between them are meaningful. The studies come mostly from corporate settings, with firm size never examined. The strength of every relationship also varied a great deal between studies, which the authors also flag themselves.

The 2 actions on slides 5 and 6 are mine, directly from the mechanism rather than tested in the paper.

Save this and open it 10 minutes before your next management meeting.

AI wrote a firm’s marketing emails as profitably as its professional writers. The catch is who you let edit them.

Quick, honest caveat first. This is one wine retailer’s email function, 3 trials, not proof for every business. If your content is regulated or reputation-sensitive, like health, finance or legal, a 10 minute check is not enough on its own.

With that said, here’s the most useful bit the video skipped. Don’t hand the AI to the writers whose jobs it threatens. In the study, the salaried writers resisted it and their output dropped, while the team that gave editing to marketing got the gains.

So if you test this, name a marketer, not a copywriter, to review and approve the AI drafts, and do it on one campaign before you change anything else. Use it to free your team’s time, not to cut the team.

Save this if you’re weighing AI for your content, and send it to whoever owns your marketing.

Source: a single-company case study of 27,500 subscribers and 3 randomised controlled trials at an online wine retailer, where AI-written email matched human writers on gross profit at a fraction of the cost.

Most business owners think online reviews are their reputation. The evidence says otherwise. Swipe to see why. ā©ļø
Ā
A 2026 synthesis in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science found that most word of mouth happens offline, in conversations you’ll never read.
Ā
The same research cites a study of 500 brands across 15 industries. Online and offline word of mouth were only strongly linked for high tech brands like Apple. For most businesses, they move independently.
Ā
That’s the blind spot most dashboards don’t show you.
Ā
That matters because other research found word of mouth moves sales at least 3x harder than advertising. Miss the offline conversation and you’re missing the strongest lever you have.
Ā
The paper also found that paid word of mouth, done well, increased FMCG sales by 3 to 18%. It warns that insincere campaigns can backfire.
Ā
Word of mouth isn’t one channel. It’s four: free, paid, online and offline, each with different rules.
Ā
Save this before you set next quarter’s marketing budget, so you can check it against all four. 🫔

Most business owners think their 2am spark of genius is clarity. Swipe to see what the evidence actually says.

You know the feeling. Wide awake, brain racing, convinced you have finally found the idea. A study of 1,344 people found that insomnia reliably predicts something specific, ADHD-like tendencies, hyperactivity, impulsivity and scattered focus. That is your brain’s braking system wearing thin, the part that would normally make you pause before a big commitment.

In the same research, 60.9% of practising entrepreneurs said they intend to start another business within the next decade. Many of them are running on exactly the same broken sleep that blunts creativity, drains energy and distorts how they judge their own ideas.

My suggestion? Self-imposed a 48-hour hold on any big, hard-to-reverse decisions, quitting a role, signing a loan, forming a partnership, etc, after a bad sleep stretch. Ask someone rested to check your thinking before you act on it.

Save this before your next 2am idea talks you into something you would never choose sober.

Most founders think complex language looks expert. A study of 18 million followers says it’s costing you reach. Swipe left.

Published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, this study analysed 4,064 real posts over three years. Researchers then replicated the effect in a controlled experiment with 236 participants using a fictitious brand. The finding held in both.

Easy-to-read posts got significantly more likes, comments, and shares. Moving the vocabulary up just one readability level was linked to 8,500 more likes per post.

The mechanism is subtle but powerful. When text is easy to read, it generates a positive feeling. The reader attributes that feeling to the quality of your content, not your word choices. You get the credit. Simple writing gets you that credit faster.

The study also tested Twitter, where posts average just 16 words. Readability shaped engagement even there. Vocabulary choice in the first few phrases determined whether a post was liked or shared. You’re shaping reach before the reader gets past line two.

Send this to whoever writes your content.

Your email sender name is more important than your subject line.

- Adding CEO to your name can increase clicks by 75.
- High-status titles build instant trust with brand new leads.
- Authority tricks only work on people who don't know you.

Most people spend weeks A/B testing their subject lines, emojis and everything else, but they never change the sender name - It’s the first thing people see!

Research shows that a strong title acts like a shortcut. It tells the reader your message has real value, but you must use this tool at the right time. Use titles for cold leads to win their attention first, then switch back to a casual name for your current customers. This simple change will help you win more business.

Do you use a job title in your sender name?

15 years ago today, aged 20, I was setting up my first business.

In many respects, I miss these days.

I acted fast and impulsively, shot at opportunities I had no right shooting at and wasn’t aware of my short comings as a wannabe entrepreneur - a blessing and a curse in equal measures.

I came across this in my Facebook memories (🤮 btw) during a break at my desk, in between signing 6+ figure agreements and legal rubbish - you know, ā€œproper, big boy, businessā€ stuff.

The point is, thinking about it, that I wish I was as confident as I was then, now. The longer I spend in entrepreneurship, the more I learn, and the more cautious I get - red tape, legal frameworks, data, product market fit, founder opportunity fit, reports, board meetings, expensive agreements and risk mitigation.

It’s good; I guess that means we are heading in the right direction to do ā€œproper, bigger boy, businessā€ stuff, right?

Maybe, maybe not, but it’s just not the same as them early days. I had WILD ideas. 🤣

I always felt I belonged in business, and I love what I’m currently doing across our businesses, but god do I miss that young, inexperienced version of me that knew absolutely nothing about business - he was naive but hungry.

Anyway, enjoy your journey, it goes fast. āœŒšŸ»

P.S. I still have my first ever business card designs on a CD šŸ˜‚

Emails have a ROI of Ā£42:Ā£1 - you can’t afford to not send emails.

This study analysed:
5,765 campaigns sent to 455 million people across 73 countries and shows what actually gets emails opened.

What they studied:
āžž Real commercial email campaigns
āžž Global dataset, not lab based
āžž Opens rates as the main metric

You can’t sell what is in the email if it isn’t opened…

Firstly, what did the study tell us didn’t work or didn’t matter?
āžž Subject line length
āžž Using numbers in subject lines
āžž Sending more emails
āžž Constant discounts

What they said did make a difference…
1. Frequency destroys attention
The more emails you send, the fewer get opened.
āžž Strongest negative effect in the study
āžž Damage compounds over time
āžž Discount emails are hit hardest

2. Segmentation > Perfect Copy
Segmented emails significantly outperform generic blasts.
āžž Second biggest driver of opens
āžž Works directly and by allowing lower frequency

3. Discounts reduce opens
Counter-intuitive but clear.
āžž Discounts and bonus offers underperform
āžž Seasonal offers, free gifts and newsletters perform better

People now filter discount language automatically.

Anything else?
āžž Special characters help improve open rates (e.g. ! ā€˜ $ € % & ( ) / )
āžž Monday performs best, Wednesday worst.
āžž Average open rate across the dataset was ~20 percent

Email marketing often fails because of over-sending and lack of relevance to the reader.

If you want higher opens:
āžž Send fewer emails
āžž Segment harder
āžž Stop leading with discounts

Most businesses should cut volume before rewriting subject lines.

🫔 Bosh

Don’t get overly attached to your first business. Your first company is unlikely to be the one that retires you.

Research suggests that first time founders only succeed about 21% of the time. Founders who have already succeeded once jumped to nearly a 1 in 3 chance.

Your first business is statistically more likely to teach you than retire you.

That does not mean the first business failed. It means it did its job.

For most of us, early ventures are about building capability rather than cashing out. They develop judgement, pattern recognition, market timing, resilience and credibility. Those assets compound into later opportunities.

Longitudinal analysis of venture backed entrepreneur shows that prior success, not just prior experience, increases the probability of future success. In other words, outcomes matter more than effort alone [1].

This also explains why many high profile entrepreneurs exited or moved on from their early ventures. The early companies were not mistakes. They were a training grounds.

If your current business is not your forever business, you are not behind. You are building the operating system that makes the next one work.

That is not failure. That is progression.
