Carrying stories older than us, and building chapters they’ll study later.During the Jim Crow era (late 19th century–1960s), many public swimming pools in the United States operated under legally enforced “whites only” policies. Segregation in public facilities remained lawful until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination in public accommodations. Even after court rulings such as Brown v. Board of Education (1954), some municipalities chose to close or drain public pools rather than integrate them.
