Hawai’i State Represenative, House District 44 - Māʻili, Lualualei, Nānākuli, Honokai Hale & Ko Olina
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This month’s edition of Westside Stories is a special one as we wrap up the 2026 Legislative Session and share some of the investments secured for our communities through this year’s state budget.

From Farrington Highway improvements and Paʻakea Road upgrades to investments in our schools, Nānākuli Homesteads, and Hawaiian Home Lands infrastructure, this edition highlights some of the work that continues to move the Waiʻanae Coast and West Oʻahu forward.

These projects and investments are the result of community advocacy, collaboration, and countless conversations with residents about the issues that matter most. While many of these challenges have existed for years, I am proud to continue working alongside our communities, colleagues, and partners to move meaningful solutions forward.

Although legislative session has adjourned, the work continues. I remain committed to being accessible, responsive, and focused on delivering results for our communities.

Mahalo for taking the time to read this month’s Westside Stories and for the continued trust and opportunity to serve the people of Māʻili, Lualualei, Nānākuli, Ko Olina, and Honokai Hale.

#Cover2 For Life: Brian Derby's legacy extends beyond 30 years of free football camps

After 30 years of giving back to his community and coaching the next generation of offensive and defensive linemen, former University of Hawaiʻi football standout Brian Derby has closed the chapter on his football camps. But his impact on the players he coached will continue for generations.

We’ve seen firsthand how quickly an emergency can impact our communities. Being prepared before something happens can make all the difference.

One simple step is building a 14-day emergency kit for you and your ʻohana with the essentials you may need if power, water, roads or other services are disrupted.

Take a little time now to prepare, check what you already have and fill in what you’re missing. Preparation is something we can all do together.

In case you missed it, the Hawaiʻi Public Utilities Commission (PUC) came to Kapolei on Thursday to hear firsthand from residents about the ongoing frustration with Hawaiian Electric, including repeated power outages, unreliable service and rising electricity costs.

While I appreciate the PUC making the effort to come to West Oʻahu, I also expressed my disappointment that this meeting was held in Kapolei rather than further down the Waiʻanae Coast, where our communities continue to experience many of these challenges firsthand.

I’m happy to share that the PUC has committed to scheduling another public meeting in our community to hear directly from residents about how these issues have impacted their daily lives.

Hawaiian Electric has also committed to coming into our community to host an open house, giving residents an opportunity to speak individually with their representatives, ask questions and share their concerns.

We’re hoping to have these meetings scheduled sometime in November, and once the dates and locations are confirmed, I’ll make sure to share that information with everyone.

I appreciate Hawaiʻi News Now for covering this important conversation and mahalo to everyone who showed up and shared their experiences.

I’ve made my frustrations clear, and while I appreciate these commitments, what matters most to me is what happens after these conversations. Our community deserves answers, accountability and improvements to the reliability of our electrical system.

October’s Westside Stories update is out!

As we close out September, I’m grateful for everyone who continues to show up for our Westside. From our Transportation Town Hall in Nānākuli to responding to Hurricane Lowell and welcoming Governor Josh Green and Transportation Director Ed Sniffen to see the impacts firsthand, it was another busy month of listening, responding and pushing our priorities forward.

There’s always more work to be done, and I remain thankful for the opportunity to do it alongside our community.

Catch my October legislative update in this month’s Westside Stories or read the full column online at wsshawaii.com.

WEST OʻAHU, JOIN THE CONVERSATION.

Our community knows firsthand what happens when the power goes out, and we all feel it when our electricity bills continue to rise.

This Thursday, the Hawaiʻi Public Utilities Commission is coming to West Oʻahu to hear directly from our community about recent outages, reliability, electricity costs and the future of our energy system.

📍 Kapolei High School Cafeteria
📅 Thursday, October 8
🕡 6:30 p.m.

I’ve heard from many of you about outages, reliability and the cost of electricity. This is our opportunity to bring those concerns directly to the PUC and make sure the Westside is part of the conversation.

I encourage our community to come out, share your experiences and ask your questions. Decisions being made about our energy future need to hear from the people who live with the impacts of those decisions.

Can’t make it? Written comments can also be submitted to the PUC referencing Docket No. 2021-0024 with “Outage 2026” in the subject line.

Yesterday was a special day at Waiʻanae Protestant Church as we celebrated the retirement of Kahu Hailama Farden after 21 years of faithful ministry and service.

Kahu Hailama’s connection to this church goes back to his childhood, and over the years he has served his church, his ʻohana and generations of our Waiʻanae community with faith, aloha and a deep commitment to our people and culture.

Mahalo, Kahu Hailama, for the lives you’ve touched, the families you’ve walked alongside and the legacy you leave at this historic church. Wishing you and your ʻohana all the best in this next chapter.

A hui hou, Kahu! 🙏🏾

A Night Under the Lights at UH!

A huge mahalo to Darius Kila and the UH Athletic Department for providing our Nānākuli Football Program with tickets to experience a UH Football game! We’d also like to extend a big mahalo to 4K Sanitation for providing the buses and transportation to get our boys there.

Opportunities like these go beyond football. They allow our athletes to experience the next level, spend time together as a team, and see what’s possible for their own futures.

Shout out to NHIS Alum #74 Vainuupo Fanuaea for continuing to be a great example for our young men.

Mahalo to everyone who continues to pour into our Golden Hawks and create opportunities for our boys. We’re grateful for the support! 💛🖤
