Last week Saturday was so much more than I ever imagined. I genuinely didn’t expect so many people to come, and seeing many familiar faces walk through the gallery to spend time with work I’ve spent the last year and a half making... it still doesn’t feel real.
I’ve spent much of that time working away by myself, so finally being able to share it with everyone was incredibly special.

Special thank you to Hannah Ireland and Darren Glass for their amazing painting assistance. Couldn’t have done it without you. Seriously ! Ha!

Thank you Anna, Priya, John and Gary, for your guidance, encouragement and support along the way.

Thank you Divyaa Kumar for spending time with the works, visiting me throughout the making process and writing such a thoughtful piece on the show.

Josephine!! (Every time πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«) you are always there by my side. Adorning the works with the most beautiful frames, and putting up with me.

To my beautiful Grandma (93!!!!!! πŸ₯Ή) and my amazing Aunty for flying over from HawaiΚ»i to be there with Mum and me... and to my dad and Jo for making the trip up from Otago.

And thank you to my friends... WOW. I feel so incredibly lucky. Thank you for showing up for me the way you always do.
Special thank you to Emma for making my dress, Binh Minh for make up, Tom for styling me, Annabella and Shannen for jewellery, Sam for the emotional support !

If you couldn’t make it on Saturday, π’œπ“ƒβ„΄π“‰π’½β„―π“‡ π’Ÿπ’Άπ“Ž is on until 25 July. The gallery is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This painting brings together a number of personal references for Claudia Kogachi. The setting is inspired by Awaji-shima, the Japanese island where she was born, renowned for producing some of the sweetest onions in Japan. Japanese ivy winds through the composition, a native plant often associated with resilience, tenacity, and prosperity.

View this work in her solo exhibition 'Another Day' on view at Gow Langsford Onehunga until 25 July.

Join us for the opening of Claudia Kogachi's Another Day at Gow Langsford Onehunga on Saturday 27 June from 2-4pm.

These works show Kogachi’s exploration of a sense of place and belongingβ€”through inherited histories, memory, research, imagination, travel and personal experience. Born in Japan and raised in Aotearoa, with strong family ties to Okinawa Island and Hawai’i, Kogachi invites us to share a personal perspective that is fragmented, layered and constantly being reconstructed.

Claudia Kogachi (@darklordsurfs) at the Gow Langsford (@gowlangsford) booth at the @aotearoaartfair

β€œBorn in Awaji-shima, Japan, and raised in
Aotearoa, Claudia Kogachi’s practice has long been
defined by an irrepressible autobiographical instinct
β€” bold, frontal figures caught in imagined scenarios
drawn from pop culture, family memory, and daily
life. In her new body of work, following her first
return to Japan in almost twenty years, the self-
portrait has not disappeared so much as embedded
itself deeper.

The painting here is a case in point. A robed
figure moves through a mossy rockface, her back
to us, geta sandals at the hem. She wears Kogachi’s
mother’s wedding kimono, though its pattern has
been stripped back β€” a deliberate absence that
speaks to what cannot quite be recovered after years
away from home. The figure is rendered in bronze
verdigris, fixed in place while time moves around it.
She holds a small heart-shaped mirror, and in it β€”
just barely β€” a face looks out. Maple leaves burn
orange at her feet; above her drift white tree
nymphs β€” one of the world’s largest butterflies,
and in several of Kogachi’s new paintings, a symbol
of ancestors returning. Like them, the self that once
filled the canvas has grown harder to pin down:
quieter, stranger, and considerably more slippery.”
