The demon Murk stalks the Shadowlands! Only the Paladin has the strength and wisdom to banish them!

Dark Valley’s ‘Tablets of Murk’ is inspired by the innovative, but flawed Commodore Amiga classic Blade Warrior. Released in 1991 by Image Works, Blade Warrior followed the exploits of a warrior-mage travelling across an atmospheric, silhouetted landscape to gather seven fragments of an ancient talisman from a variety of weird wizards in their precarious towers. The atmosphere exuded by the graphics was breathtaking - although the sound, though well-received at the time - was incredibly minimal, and it had no music to speak of save for two, thin background drones.

‘Tablets of Murk’ samples the original sound effects from Blade Warrior and uses them exclusively to create a 30-minute chiaroscuro dungeon synth tribute, which sounds like a lost 16-bit tracker project recovered from an unlabelled 3.5” floppy.

If you haven't yet checked out 'Through the Cavern of Night to the Labyrinth of Light', here is a nudge!

This is a 23-minute EP, co-released with @mountainforestcabindweller, with two fantasy synth tracks bookending a longer dark ambient track that plots a journey from the sepulchral to the celestial. I have to say that the central track is one my favourite recordings in recent months. Give it time to unfold!

PLUS the download also includes a print-and-play game called 'Cavern of Night' written by my alias 1d10+5, and illustrated by @chaoclypse. It's a side-scrawling necro-crawl that has some DNA from BASILISK! and Runebound 2e. I must also nod to @level1hero and @axxon_n.47, whose games Dungeon, Grimspire, and KERGUS! were also present in my mind while making it.

Some old school RPG business... The Fantasy Trip, published between 1977-1980 (then limping on without designer Steve Jackson for another thre years until the publisher, Metagames, imploded).

As a kid I had one of the modules - Orb Quest - but none of the other rules. I was, however, spellbound by its seeming ungraspable complexity... and it is a great system as I have discovered 35 years later, after randomly seeing some of the rules for a decent price. Quite intense and deadly tactical combat, but actually more interesting than many 'can we get this over with now?!' dice chucking sessions in the theatre of the mind.

Band practice being postponed, I cracked open Death Test. Last picture is the party shortly before being mauled to death by bears. Can't fault the realism there...

“Noslyth had come far, but now the lunar month was drawing to its close. The thinnest sliver of white light hung in the dusky purple sky as Noslyth drew their horse to a halt on a plateau overlooking the Dark Valley. The last twenty-three days had been punishing… and now they were here: on the verge of their final foray. Below them the valley drops into darkness; acrid smoke curls from an evil borehole at its centre. Vast dragons shriek horrifically, as they circle the lightning-blasted peaks. At daybreak Noslyth will descend, scaling the darkness of the mysterious pit. What waits within, none have told. Miserable death… or mountains of gold?”

Many of Dark Valley’s EPs follow a ritualised, archetypal pattern: a journey from our the world we know, down into the subterranean, mythic underworld of the dungeon… and a passage through the darkness to glorious, transcendent realms. For this reworking of the adventurer’s story, Dark Valley’s Lord Agsgodis is joined by Rig Flare from Leeds’ geomantic drone unit Borehole. Spinning out from the ‘Withered Claw’ session for Dark Valley’s ‘World Fades’ album, the music offered here spans blackened dungeon-synth, discordant doom, and celestial choirwork. This is experimental, chiaroscuro dungeon synth for those who like to delve deep.

“The Ultimate Adventure” is the debut album from Treguard, a DS project inspired by the legendary late 80s / early 90s UK children’s TV show Knightmare.

These tracks build upon the Treguard Demo and delve further into the mysterious world of Knightmare. The ominous dungeon world exerts a mysterious power in return, dragging the recordings back into the world of late 20th century analogue, shrouded in cassette hiss.
