It’s been a big week for birthdays and we celebrated my mom‘s 87th over the weekend. My parents are staying in the cutest cottage on Lake Lewisville and we enjoyed dinner, football and a beautiful sunset. My mom requested a banana nut cake “just like my mother used to make me”, so I did my best. I’m sure my grandmother‘s tasted better, but it felt special to make. We all left with smiles on our faces and joy in our hearts. My mom is easy to celebrate and so much fun and I cannot be more thankful for this beautiful life and my very special mom. A few months ago, we learned that Bill had a severely leaking aortic valve in his heart. He was told he needed open-heart surgery, soon and it was decided that he would get a cow valve. It is truly miraculous to me that God made the human heart, and God made cow and pig hearts, and he made some of their parts interchangeable. (And how amazing too that there are physicians and researchers, smart enough to figure out how to do that!). While in surgery they discovered a bigger issue with Bill’s aortic root that they were also able to repair as well.

Recovery will take a while, but Bill is doing great. The nurses said he was getting in more steps in the hospital than they were. 😅 Savannah made Bill they Superman picture which was so funny.

Bill‘s patched up heart and mine continue to overflow with joy and gratitude at the goodness and faithfulness of God in our lives. So many hallelujahs! ❤️‍🩹 taken in Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital - Plano by @darlabaerg

Today marks 36 years with my forever. Grateful for every year that we’ve shared together, but this one hits a bit differently. A week ago tomorrow Bill had open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve. Brittany, wanting to make today special, printed out these pictures and had them out for us this morning. Savannah made us heart shaped waffles. Grateful for the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness, for Bill’s new and improved heart, for a love that lasts a lifetime and some kids who really wanted to make today special. ❤️‍🩹 by @darlabaerg

Pinch me! Am I dreaming?! “Been waiting so long” and yesterday we took our first “Destination Darla” trip, a birthday surprise courtesy of Jacob Baerg and his employer, American Airlines. Jacob and I have back-to-back birthdays and I have loved passing the birthday baton to him each year. This year when he showed up for my birthday dinner, straight from work, he handed me a FedEx envelope with three boarding passes inside. He said it was time for Destination Darla to takeoff 😊✈️ and he wanted take me and Bill on our first trip for my birthday/ My love language is the gift of time and I could not love this more. I’m still smiling about it. He said we could go anywhere and we looked at all the open flights and decided for a quick day trip Bentonville seemed the best option. We had lunch @tablemesabistro and I would hop on another flight right this second to have their butternut squash enchiladas again. They treated us each to a slice of the tres leches cake of my dreams. I got chocolate and Jacob got key lime. After lunch we walked around the cute Bentonville square and checked out the Walmart museum (so fun to see all the relics and toys from my childhood). Afterwards we went to the amazing @crystalbridgesmuseum. To be honest I don’t love museums but this one is totally different! I could have stayed for hours. All of the art is American and they have such a great collection of so many kinds of art. We would have done the trails surrounding it too but it felt like it wss 150° and we had a flight home to catch. The friend that I have had for longer than any in the world, since birth, lives close to the museum so we ran by her house for a quick hug which just added to the special day. We took a quick exit off of the freeway on the way back to the airport to see the Walmart headquarters. When we got to the airport, our flight was oversold but they told us to walk down a few gates and there would be another plane to take us. And when they said “take us” I didn’t know they meant JUST us (and one other sweet college girl). We had the whole jet to ourselves! Cheers to 59 and many more adventures! 🎆 Destination Darla may have gone to Washington, DC, for America’s 250th birthday celebration, but Dressing Room Darla showed up too and knew there was a Frances Valentine store waiting just down the road in Old Town Alexandria. 😄

We did go see the Declaration of Independence but I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a hot 4th of July afternoon than popping over to see the store and try on a little red, white, and blue—because who doesn’t want to look cute for America’s 250th birthday party? 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

The store was absolutely charming, decked out in patriotic bunting, and filled with fun Fourth of July-worthy styles. Afterwards Bill and I made our way back to the National Mall for the fireworks, but I’m so glad I didn’t miss seeing the @francesvalentine sparkle first. ✨🎆

Bill has been playing golf since he was 15 years old and while in Lajitas he finally made the elusive hole on one! I was so incredibly happy that I got to be there to see it and so special it was a round he and Jacob were playing together. It was just all in all an incredible day. The guys were nice to let me come along as a caddy, although the whole no talking thing is harder than it seems (for me anyway, haha). taken in Lajitas Golf Resort by @darlabaerg

It felt like another world and another time. The only sound was that of the clip clop of the horses hooves as we watched the sun set over the mountains. Truly unforgettable.

When I say I had the time of my life these last eight months, I truly mean it. What started as an offhanded comment — “I think it would be so fun to work at Frances Valentine” — somehow turned into one of the sweetest and most joyful seasons for me.

I met the loveliest clients and colleagues. And while my title may have been “stylist,” the job was, for me, less about selling clothes and more about helping women feel seen, beautiful, confident, and special.

There were so many memorable days. One afternoon, a woman came in to return a gold dress she had planned to wear to a Mardi Gras party in New Orleans. It would have been the first event she attended since losing her husband, and she told me the dress now felt “too bright” for the way she felt. We stood there together in the store, both wiping away tears — hers for the grief she was carrying, and mine for her broken heart. Together we found something more understated and elegant that felt right for her. As she left, I hugged her and told her she was going to look beautiful. I hope she knows how much I meant it. Her courage to go, even through her loss, because “he would have wanted me to,” stayed with me long after she walked out the door.

Another day, a woman came in looking for something to wear to her 70th birthday party. We found the perfect dress, and I told her I knew exactly which shoes would complete the outfit. When I brought them out, she laughed and said, “I’m not fun enough to wear those.” I told her that was only because she hadn’t put them on yet. The moment she slipped them on felt a little like watching Cinderella find her glass slipper. Her whole face lit up as she admired them in the mirror. As she walked out of the store, she turned back and said, “Maybe I am a little fun.” I told her, “Oh, I know you are.” I still smile thinking about it.

In the end, I found myself between a store policy that required Saturdays and an opportunity to travel more on the weekends with Bill, taking advantage of Jacob’s new American Airlines flight benefits.

The signature Frances Valentine color showed up in a big way in Little Rock this week for the annual Bolo Bash supporting Baptist Health Behavioral Services.

It began with an elegant reception at the Capital Hotel on Tuesday evening, followed by a fabulous luncheon and style show on Wednesday—where @francesvalentine was on full display.

A highlight was hearing @elyce_arons share both fun stories from her career in fashion and touching memories of her friendship with Kate Spade, along with a meaningful reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health.

A big thank you to my high school friend Cindy Minor, @thattravelagentlady, for knowing that if Little Rock and Frances Valentine were having a moment, I would want to be there. You’re a true FV fashionista, and I loved getting to experience it with you.

Cindy’s daughter, Caroline, also did a fabulous job as co-chair of the event.
