Yawara Akanga, Denilson Baniwa’s new solo exhibition at A Gentil Carioca SP, presents a series of wall-based works and hangings in natural pigments and feathers on bark fibre, each extending his examination of the forced Christianisation of indigenous people in the Amazon region by European Catholic colonialists beginning ver 400 years ago and continuing in different guises today.

The works blend sixteenth century depictions of colonialist brutality with western art history and twentieth century sci-fi, as well as images of Christian iconography, Greek and Roman mythology, and indigenous cosmology, flora and fauna. These complex and beautiful works reflect the syncretism and energy of the region’s spiritual life despite centuries of colonisation and cultural encroachment.

It’s been a while since I last saw work by Cameroonian artist Pascal Marthine Tayou, so it was wonderful to see his extensive exhibition Knockout! at Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil. existing and newly created site-specific works fill an enfilade of rooms, each dedicated to a major global conference ranging from Berlin in the late nineteenth century (where European countries redrew to boundaries of African countries and divided ‘ownership’ among themselves) through Yalta, San Francisco, Rome, Rio de Janeiro and others, each riven with a sense of optimism and the problematic entanglements of global politics. I wonder if the show’s title is a reference to Jeux sans Frontières, a somewhat absurdist competition that echoed global politics and cooperation/competition back in the 60s and 70s.

With seemingly inexhaustible creativity, artist Ty Locke finds poetry and insight in the unexpected manipulation of humble everyday materials. Hand Me Downs at Copperfield Gallery (on until 16 May) made me think joyfully of Jean Cocteau at a clearance sale. The show demonstrates perfectly the way Locke explores his personal history, identity and experience through humour, craft, labour and a visual equivalent of slant rhyme.

Join us for the opening of “Halfway to the Sun” at @somersgallery on Thursday, 5 February, 6-9pm.

The exhibition will showcase @david_rickard_ ’s forthcoming public art installation curated by Climate Art. Exploring how polluting systems can be reimagined, the installation responds to the pressing air quality issues in Somers Town.

Thanks to @wemakecamden @eustontown @akt_ii Transition VC and @maylimltd for the generous support. by @darryl_de_prez

✨📚 We’re excited to shine a spotlight on “Running and Returning” – the first comprehensive monograph dedicated to internationally acclaimed artist and writer @jyll.bradley, edited by @debbiemeniru and @darryl_de_prez and designed by @daly_lyon.

Spanning more than four decades, Bradley’s practice moves fluidly between photography, film, writing, performance, sculpture and her celebrated large-scale public installations. A pioneer in the artistic use of commercial lightbox technology, she transforms minimalist, industrial forms into radiant spaces of identity, memory, spirituality and community, as seen in landmark works such as Green/Light (for M.R.) for the Folkestone Triennial, Dutch/Light at Turner Contemporary, and The Hop at the Hayward Gallery.

“Running and Returning”, published by Kulturalis earlier this year, brings this remarkable journey to the page in a richly illustrated volume featuring essays and reflections from leading voices in contemporary art and literature. Contributors include @rugoffralph, @nicolettalambertucci, @annaclynecomposer, @noreen_masud, Victoria Pomery, @fatosustek and more, making this an essential resource for anyone interested in contemporary art, sculpture and interdisciplinary practice 🎨📖

✨ Running and Returning is available now via @accartbooks_
