One of my favourite things I've got to do over the last few years is commissioning writers whose work I love so that I get to read more of it!

As co-editor of Jyll Bradley’s monograph ‘Running and Returning’, I was able to invite several contributors to write about Jyll’s work. Two brilliant examples are @noreen_masud and @abipalmer_bot

Noreen Masud responded to ‘Green/Light for M.R.’., a public artwork installed in Folkestone for 9 years. I originally read Noreen’s writing in the Guardian — a piece about her love for flat landscapes. I was captivated by the depth of meaning, and the beauty, she brought out from the simple geometry of a horizontal line. Jyll has often spoken about the ‘verticality’ of her public sculptures, and I was really intrigued about how Noreen might respond to them. The text she wrote brings together Jyll’s work with the words of Robert Hass and ‘The Waves’ by Virgina Woolf

Abi Palmer responded to ‘Greenhouse Disappearing into Night’, an early watercolour Jyll made in her family’s greenhouse. The idea of being stuck inside and looking out seemed to resonate with Abi’s beautiful film ‘Abi Palmer Invents the Weather’ which I saw as part of @new_contemporaties at @camdenartcentre. I loved the script for the film and was really excited when Abi agreed to write for Jyll’s book. The short story she wrote echoes the feeling of wanting to create a safe haven for yourself as a teenager.

These are just two of so many great texts in the book. It contains brilliant essays by @nicolettalambertucci @gemmarollsbentley @fatosustek and @andrew.renton and other wonderful contributions from @goldwaterhelena @adesola_akinleye @rugoffralph Melanie Kress, Victoria Pomery and Blair Todd.

Most of the images in this post are from: 'Running and Returning’, Jyll’s survey show at @theboxplymouth which closes on 2 November.
