Porcine Raiders from Swine Raid release for @bestiarum.games

A porcine witch-priest adorned in feathers and filth, turning hunger into frenzy and guiding the raidโ€™s violence.

The Porcine are dense, brutal creatures, built from blubberous fat layered over iron-hard muscle. Despite their size, they move with startling speed when the scent of stored food hangs in the air. They create nothing of their own. They do not build, refine, or preserve. Instead they prowl the edges of civilisation, watching for weakness: a lone wagon, an unguarded store, a settlement that has lingered too long.

When they strike, it is sudden and careless violence. There is no formation and no caution, only a surge of flesh and iron driven by hunger that dulls fear and pain. Crude blades and stolen tools rise and fall in a chaotic press, and the raiders take wounds that would drop lesser foes. Thick hides and heavy fat turn aside small weapons, making them a nightmare for common travellers who can do little but brace behind splintering wagons.

They do not fight to secure victory. They fight to eat. Even as battle rages, they tear open packs and carts, gorging on grain, flesh, and offal alike, then vanish back into wild country leaving only ruin, waste, and silence.

The Porcine Juggernaut...

A @bestiarum.games miniature Iโ€™ve had for quite some time, and one Iโ€™ve also been working on for quite some time, but only now finally managed to finish...

Once again, I combined a variety of different techniques and concepts for this one, starting with a highly varied skin tone, heavy rust and verdigris effects, realistic gore, and the representation of glowing embers and ash.

For the skin, I used a combination of PVA, oil paints and various washes to build up the different textures and tones.

For the rust and verdigris, I used the fantastic products from @goblinshut : #dirtydownrust and #dirtydownverdigris

A lot of acrylic washes and enamels also went into the piece.

For the glowing embers on the base, I first used pigments and Ultra Matte Varnish to create the appearance of a burned-out fire pit. I then painted smaller pockets of glowing embers using red and orange acrylics. Finally, I added a few highlights with yellow fluorescent paint to really make those hot spots glow.

THE FORM OF THE END

DOCUMENTATION RECOVERED:

Examination began once a partial reconstruction was stable.

No single anatomy could be established. Structures recur at different scales. Several limbs terminate within adjacent tissue, while others continue into portions absent from every surviving frame.

Cross-reference produced one match: the Traveller.

Features previously dismissed as incidental deformities recur in the same proportions across earlier manifestations.

The smaller forms may have been constrained expressions of the same entity.

More troubling was the reconstruction itself. Measurements taken from one anatomical landmark could not be reconciled with those taken from another. Perspective correction increased the discrepancy.

The visible body may represent only the portion that could be [21 WORDS UNRECOVERABLE] within the observed environment.

Repeated modelling produced the same inversion: the subject was not entering the recorded space. The recorded space was [8 WORDS UNRECOVERABLE].

NOTES:
This piece started as my HOTF2 submission and became one of my more experimental Archive projects.

It was my first time deliberately building a heatmap across a large flesh-heavy miniature: Reikland Fleshshade as the midtone, Carroburg Crimson for warmer areas and Coelia Greenshade for colder ones, reinforced later with Villainy Ink enamels.

I covered most of the skin with a Green Stuff World PVA layer, peeling it away around selected wounds and stretching UHU across them for torn membrane and connective tissue. UV resin was used for the mouth fluid and eyes, with dry pigment mixed into the resin.

For the base, I wanted the ground to look pulled from the sea beneath the subject, with the surrounding water moving inward. The background extends the same distortion beyond the piece.

THE PROCESSION OF THE PILGRIM

DOCUMENTATION RECOVERED:

Continued observation confirmed that the figures had not reached the ruins as a single group.

They arrived separately, approaching from different directions and at irregular intervals, yet each followed the same route upon entering the site.

Over time, the arrivals gathered around a female clerical figure stationed beside the road. She carried a broad ceremonial vessel containing a thick crimson substance.

Each pilgrim approached her in turn and received a portion from the vessel. Once the group had assembled, the cleric moved among them, raising a hand above each bowed figure in what appeared to be a formal blessing.

No prayer or verbal command was recorded.

Several subjects retained bells, books and other objects associated with religious observance. Severe physical deformation was present throughout the group, though none appeared uncertain of the route ahead.

Following the final blessing, the gathered pilgrims departed together.

The cleric remained at the ruins.

The procession continued beyond the limits of the original observation site.

Surveillance has been extended along the suspected route.

Observation remains ongoing.

NOTE:

Dreadwatch Frontier by @bestiarum.games was a set I wanted to use almost immediately after printing it. Its broken stonework and weathered forms gave the scene exactly the kind of bleak, forgotten atmosphere I wanted, somewhere between a ruined sanctuary and a place that has been abandoned for far too long.

For the figures, I wanted the Grove Parishioners to read as a slow religious procession. The Chalice Matron was painted apart from them, with a paler, colder presence and stronger reds, so she would feel less like another pilgrim and more like a fixed milestone along their path.

I also continued experimenting with practical fog and lighting, using the low haze to visually bind the figures into one scene.

Hey folks!

Got a little project for you today that took me way longer than I originally planned. Itโ€™s been a seriously busy month and I often just couldnโ€™t find the energy or motivation to sit down and work on it.

Iโ€™ve been testing the awesome Dreadwatch modular FDM terrain from @bestiarum.games , specifically the Watchtower, which is just one small part of their new Dreadwatch: The Sundered Stockade project, now live on their MyMiniFactory.

I think the whole Keystone modular terrain idea is awesome. You can build it, expand it and completely rearrange everything whenever you want a different setup. Itโ€™s obviously great for tabletop players, but for me itโ€™s also perfect as a flexible backdrop for future miniature photoshoots.

Iโ€™m hoping the guys keep pushing the idea further with some other cool terrain sets. Something with a sci fi vibe would be damn awesome.

I've used a variety of enamels from @grimdark_compendium
and @akinteractive.official

Now that the judging for Dread Arcana is complete, I wanted to share some additional still images and take a deeper look at the project.

Rather than simply sharing the finished miniature, ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐ƒ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง looks behind the finished piece โ€” at the references, symbolism, design decisions and experiments that went into creating it. I'd like to do more of these for projects where there's a story worth unpacking.

For Dread Arcana, I was randomly assigned XVII โ€” The Star, paired with Decarabia. I chose to combine the two: taking the traditional card's themes of hope, renewal and restoration and corrupting them through the imagery and lore of Decarabia.

It also became a chance to stretch myself with techniques I'd never tried before: superglue flesh, realistic hair, resin water, hanging strands of blood, and building a backdrop directly onto the plinth.
Some worked better than others.

The superglue worked as intended, but its texture didn't quite suit the delicate figure I'd envisioned. The hair went through several iterations before I was happy with it. And the resin taught me a few lessons

There was a point midway through where I genuinely wasn't sure the piece was going to come together.
But that's also why I'm glad I pushed through it.

By the end, it was much closer to the image I'd originally had in my head โ€” and I'm incredibly stoked that it received ๐“๐‡๐„ ๐‡๐€๐‘๐๐ˆ๐๐†๐„๐‘: โ€œ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜›๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ.โ€

Considering the concept was built around taking a card associated with hope and turning that hope into something dreadful, that award feels pretty fitting.

Huge thanks to @grimdark.trials, @the_sprue_butcher and @darsula for putting Dread Arcana together โ€” and to all the painters who created some incredible interpretations!
