When was the last time you did something (BIG) for the first time? . For me, it was early January. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” After listening to multiple podcast hosts (@jockowillink , @andystumpf212 โ€˜s @clearedhotpodcast , & @joerogan to name a few) speak the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I set all the excuses in my head aside and signed up for a class. . BEST. DECISION. EVER. . I initially had concerns. Concerns about getting injured. Concerns about not learning the techniques fast enough. Concerns about not being in good enough shape. . However, after only a few classes I realized my concerns were largely unnecessary. There were people there just like myself - brand new, same build, same concerns. The academy uses yellow tape on the belt to identify new students so instructors (and other fellow students) know to give us a little extra time (or not roll us into a pretzel TOO tight). . And I LOVED it. It felt great to be completely new at something, where making mistakes were expected. I didnโ€™t realize how much I craved being a beginner again. . At a recent belt promotion, a newly-minted Purple Belt was asked for some words of advice. His answer โ€œJust keep showing up.โ€ . Itโ€™s as simple as that - Consistency. So Iโ€™ve kept at it. After a recent class, the Professor called a few of us up and placed a single white band at the end of our belts, indicating the first step in our BJJ progression. . I was STOKED. It states that things are starting to make sense, and I can articulate concepts and demonstrate appropriate body positioning (albeit still a little clumsily). . Holy cow itโ€™s been a hot minute. Apparently this old Q-dog can still learn a few new tricks. . Last September, I started training on a new aircraft - the Embraer 175. Polar opposite in design theory from my trusty Q400. Through at-home study, in-class lectures, procedures training lessons, simulator flying, and real-world flights with a designated Check Pilot, I was successfully granted the position of Pilot-in-Command of this regional airliner. Many kudos given to all of the instructors who provided absolute top-level guidance along this journey! . On 26 January, 2023 Horizon Air flew its last scheduled Q400 revenue flight. The following day, as a token of appreciation for over 20 years of service, select employees were given the opportunity to ride on the Q400 one last time. I was one of those lucky few. . It was incredibly bittersweet. I absolutely LOVED my time flying the Q. It taught me so many things, and afforded me the chance to share that knowledge with others as an instructor. . Now, I get to do the same thing in the E175, utilizing both procedures trainers and leading-edge Virtual Reality technology. . Three weeks ago, I closed a significant chapter in my aviation career - I flew my last flight in the Q400. . 17 years, 7 months, 20 days. . 8,553.5 hours. 6,888.5 as First Officer, 1,665 as Captain. Based in PDX, ANC, and BOI. . That last day was not the perfect flying day, but it was the typical day of Q400 flying. 06:25 report. 5 flight legs, with only one ever getting above FL210. Two maintenance write-ups. Delays for baggage, passengers issues, and more. Catching wake out of nowhere - twice. . The last flight - QXโ€™s classic SEA-PDX shuttle, was the perfect ending to my Q400 career. Running late, full with a jump seater, super hot outside. South departure, beautiful views of Mt. St. Helens, culminating in a visual approach with one of the best landings I could get (using the HGS, of course). And to top it off - we parked it at the farthest parking spot, and put the plane to bed. I was even lucky enough to have my Chief Pilot aboard! . Definitely bittersweet, but I wouldnโ€™t have changed it for anything. . Iโ€™m still staying with Horizon - just changing to a new aircraft: the fancy, incredibly well-designed Embraer 175. . HYROX April 2022. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” Once again, this event was AWESOME. The venue was different, the layout was different, but the standards were (duh) STANDARD. Thatโ€™s one of the things I love about this race: itโ€™s absolute commitment to a standard. The weight / distance is standard across every HYROX event, whether itโ€™s DAL, LAX, BOS, BER, or LON. . Because of this, improvement can be directly measured. After we finished, we immediately compared our November finish time to this event. . WE FINISHED 5 MINUTES FASTER! Every 1,000m split was faster, and nearly every station was faster as well. We can also see where more improvement can be made. (FYI: weโ€™re slow. We get it. Weโ€™re also not 20-something anymore, and we like tacos & ice cream. ๐Ÿ˜‰) . But the best part of every HYROX event thus far? The athletes. These people BRING IT in Spades. After crossing the finish like (and promptly collapsing), a guy who finished WAY faster than us came up and said โ€œWay to go! You guys did awesome!!โ€ . All I knew at that moment was that we finished, and that I was glad to be done. I didnโ€™t care what our finish time was. I didnโ€™t care where we placed. All I knew right then was that I put my best effort into the race, and someone who I didnโ€™t know recognized and applauded that. . THAT is awesome. . This event makes me hungry for more improvement. Yes, itโ€™s true. According to the email, โ€œby the end of 2023โ€, QX is going to cease flying the Q400. . Itโ€™s been my aircraft for over 17 years. 9.5 of that as a First Officer. 9+ as a Captain. Nearly 5 as an instructor. I donโ€™t know when my last flight in her will be. . I love this airplane. Itโ€™s slow. Itโ€™s not entirely pretty. She definitely keeps you on your toes. But I wouldnโ€™t (voluntarily) give up flying her for a second. . HYROX Dallas 2021. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” โ€œThese are my arms.โ€ โ€œThese are my legs.โ€ โ€œThese are my lungs.โ€ โ€œThis is my heart.โ€ โ€œThese are my competitors,โ€ โ€œBut this is MY race!โ€ โ€ขโ€ขโ€ขโ€ขโ€ข Talk about pre-launch hype speech. โ€ขโ€ขโ€ขโ€ขโ€ข @hyroxamerica Dallas was an event thatโ€™s been on my radar for a while. COVID managed to cancel, the postpone the LA event I was originally scheduled for. Add to that a shoulder dislocation in early June, so Dallas in November was the smart choice. . This event was AWESOME. Itโ€™s as if OCR and CrossFit had a happy baby: 8 separate โ€œworkoutโ€ stations, each preceded by a 1,000m run. Think CrossFit โ€œgrindโ€-style movements (lunges, row, sled push, etc) without the barbell skill- or gymnastics-based movement patterns, combined with OCRโ€™s running, but without hills or mud. . The athletes here are a different breed than OCR, too. Nearly everyone here was โ€œAge Group or Betterโ€ fit. I did pretty well at some stations. Others were a First Class ticket on the Struggle Bus. @carlyawaterman was the perfect Mixed Pairs partner. Where I lacked, she excelled, and vice versa. . This is a DEFINITE do-again event. @mgbracing @nataliemiano_ocr - I think I found my wheelhouse. .
