TOTD 57 - Ripped

Portishead - The Rip (Datassette remix) [unreleased]
https://youtu.be/wli2cpycWnw?si=fqDFBtl_bpPO5Tqv
[ TOTD Playlist link in bio ]

The first of what is likely to be many, many tunes I'll post by @datassette over the coming months (years?). This one is a lil re-rub of the excellent 'The Rip' by Portishead, and launches into the stratosphere with a tasty full-throated bass riff to set against Beth Gibbons' ghostly vox and the great arp.

Photo is a satellite image of The Rip in Victoria, Australia.

Out to John and Laura on this, and also to Body Butter. by @datassette

I've made a habit of always having a little stereo field recording rig* with me, so whenever I'm walking for more than an hour I can record the journey along with a GPS plot on my phone.

I've always loved the look of the old Ordnance Survey maps, and it turns out there's a free(ish) OS maps data API that you can use to build little animations like these.

Paired with the austere map symbols, all the environmental sounds, textures, and conversation fragments conjure strong phantom spatial images in your head. (I also quite enjoy listening as zone-out noise for working).

Consider this series a survey of what different parts of the UK sounded like in the 2020s (before the global warming AI apocalypse really kicked off).

Audio Survey Episode 2 is now up on my YouTube channel, plez like and subscribe if you're into that kind of thing:
