Meet Military Working Dog (MWD) Sury.

MWD Sury is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois. She works within on our Service Police Dog courses, helping personnel train to be Service Police Dog handlers.

Sury is tireless, & always eager to work. When she isn’t working, she loves to play with her canine friends at the DATR. Well, the ones that can keep up with her! Sury’s favourite toy is a red kong.

If you seen our last post about MWD Beta helping the local Civilian Police to locate a missing person. MWD Sury also helped on that task & worked really hard. She was a little gutted that Beta found the person, but can’t you win them all!

We’re proud to announce that the Defence Animal Training Regiment has been selected as a finalist in the LGBTQ+ Defence Awards 2026. We are nominated for the Trailblazer of the Year Award on 08 Oct 26,
at the Grand Hall, Covent Garden, London.

Our Regiment is a unique place to work. From caring for & training Military Working Animals, to developing the personnel who work alongside them. Our success depends on having the right people, with the right skills & commitment, regardless of their personal identity.

Our team includes Military Personnel, Civil Servants, Security Personnel, & Contractors, who all contribute to the Regiment. Whatever their background, race, identity or gender, our focus is simple: Supporting our people & ensuring everyone has the opportunity to contribute as the best version of themselves. In doing so, we see that reflected in the quality of their work.

Being recognised as a finalist reflects the inclusive environment our personnel & wider workforce have helped create. An equal opportunity organisation, with a team we are very proud of!

Meet MWD Arlet:

Military Working Dog Arlet is a 5-year-old German Shepherd Service Police Dog at our Canine Training Squadron.

Arlet trains personnel to be Service Police Dog Handlers. This involves all of the core protection dog skills like bite work, but additionally: Area / Building search, Article search, Crowd-control, stand-off, the dark art of tracking & more.

When Arlet isn’t helping students achieve their full potential on course, she enjoys hanging out with her canine friends. Arlet is a hard worker, so we treat her to weekly hydrotherapy.

Today, RAF Police personnel from the Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR), marked the Battle of Britain in Melton Mowbray town centre.

Our RAFP personnel marched alongside the RAF Air Cadets, the RAF Association, members of the wider RAF & local Emergency Services, to name a few. In doing so, they paid tribute to the enormous efforts made by the RAF Fighter Pilots & Bomber Crews, during WWII, to establish air superiority. Their selfless actions, ensured Britains victory in the skies.

As Sir Winston Churchill said in one of his most famous speeches:

“Never in the field of human conflict, was so much been owed by so many, to so few”.

Today, we remembered ‘The Few’.

We would like to thank the people of Melton Mowbray for lining the streets to share the Battle of Britain commemoration with us.

Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) Initial Trade Training course 2602 have passed-out as qualified RAVC Military Working Dog handlers.

This course was a mixture of the end of the summer heatwave & changeable weather conditions. However, this provided a unique training opportunity for the handlers, managing both their own administration & their Military Working Dogs welfare in a variety of warm or damp weather. Congratulations to course 2602 on successfully entering the ranks of the RAVC.

We wish them well for the future & thank them for their efforts over the last few months!

Special mention:
Best Endeavour - Pte Twiner

Various Pass-out Parade & Final Exercise images are attached.

Ex-Military Working Dog Lepke:

Lepke has retired from Military service & started a rather unique new chapter, working as a Security Dog at Riddlesworth Hall, Norfolk.

Originally trained as an Infantry Patrol (IP) Dog, Lepke was set for the jungles of Brunei. However, when found unsuitable for transport by plane, our rehoming team found her a new UK role.

Lepke now patrols the extensive grounds of the prestigious, Grade II listed Riddlesworth Hall alongside her security handler. Interestingly, the estate also has its own military connection, with part of Riddlesworth Park having been used as a British Army camp during World War II. The estate was formerly home to Riddlesworth Hall School, where Diana, Princess of Wales, was once a pupil.

Lepke has gone from Military life to working on an estate with its own mansion & as you can imagine, she loves it! Not only does she patrol the beautiful grounds & enjoy some of the mansion’s interior luxuries, she even has a pool to play & relax in. All in a day’s work!

Enjoy the images which show Lepke on Riddlesworth Hall estate & with one of the DATR’s Kennel Assistants Molly, who loved walking her at the DATR & took some images with her on the estate.
