Meet Ex-MWH Kelpie:

Ex-Military Working Horse Kelpie has been retired for several years now & had many great adventures with his new owner Amy.

Amy worked at Colchester Garrison Saddle Club, as part of her resettlement from her RAF career. That’s when she met & fell in love with Kelpie.

Amy told us…
“Kelpie is known as a bit of a legend & has entertained crowds with his antics at local shows. Whilst he is incredibly cheeky, he always tries his best & as a team, we’ve tried pretty much every equine activity available. Kelpie has been my horse of a lifetime”.

Great to hear you are doing so well Kelpie. Thank you Amy, for this update & giving his such a fun retirement!

It’s the final week for our RAVC Initial Trade Training students, who all aim to qualify as RAVC Military Working Dog (MWD) Handlers this Friday!

Since our last update, they have fully developed their skills & been thoroughly tested during the operational exercise phase. They have also visited 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, to see the unit they may soon be part of.

With the main testing phase now complete, they only have a few days left to show their instructors they are ready to leave training. We wish them all success, as they approach the conclusion of the course.

We look forward to sharing our official RAVC pass-out images & a variety of final exercise images at the end of the week!

5x Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) Reservist Soldiers have successfully completed their Military Working Dog (MWD) Handler Course.

Throughout the course, the students developed a wide range of essential MWD handling skills. At the start of the course, the students gained a strong foundation in animal husbandry, enabling them to provide an excellent level of welfare to the MWDs in their care. As the course progressed, they built their confidence in obedience & agility training. They also learnt the fundamentals of developing their MWD’s bitework & Pickup / Indication capability.

Our instructors were impressed by the Reservists’ enthusiasm, determination, & commitment to learning. Each student brought their unique real-life personal & professional experience & applied it to areas of the course.

We congratulate all of the students on passing the course & wish them success in their future Reservist Soldier roles as 101 MWD Sqn (North Luffenham), Military Working Dog handlers.

A special mention goes to Pte Hunter, paired with MWD Rony: Pte Hunter was awarded Top Student.

Today we are featuring:
Pte Wilkinson & MWD Marschal.

Pte Wilkinson told us:
“Military Working Dog (MWD) Marschal is a highly motivated MWD with passion for his work. It took a while to build my relationship with Marschal, however, when I gained his trust he really progressed. He’s a great MWD & also helped build my experience as a MWD handler.”

We wish Pte Wilkinson all the best with his career & well done to MWD Marschal!

Our Military Working Dogs are enjoying new toys. LCpl Kennedy, one of our RAVC Soldiers researched & arranged for the purchase of some new jumbo dog toys. So far, they seem to be holding up great.

If you have a larger breed or a dog that often damages other toys, these even self-inflate when punctured.

Our Veterinary team checked these toys out prior to them being used & as you can see in the images, our dogs are very thankful for their approval.

Meet MWD Szasa:

Military Working Dog Szasa is currently employed at MOD Ashchurch. He is a Patrol Dog & 5 years old.

Szasa is drawing a lot of attention lately at Hartpury University & College, where he is attending hydrotherapy sessions. This forms part of his rehabilitation with Empowered Canine Physio following TPLO (canine knee) surgery.

Szasa loves going, mainly for the positive attention he receives & of course some dog-safe peanut butter on the ‘licky mat’. He has also developed a fantastic bond with Zoe, his Physiotherapist!

Szasa is loving life at MOD Ashchurch & all the extra special care he’s receiving. We’d like to wish him all the best with the rest of his recovery & to thank Katy from Ashchurch for sending us this news. I’m sure lots of our staff will remember Szasa from his initial training at the DATR.

Ex-MWH’s Infinity & Musa-Qala:

We are delighted that Ex-Military Working Horses Infinity & Musa-Qala have settled into a well-earned retirement with The Horse Trust! They were escorted on their retirement journey by members of the DATR’s Veterinary Training Squadron who have looked after them for the last year & a half along side many of our Equine grooms.

Infinity (17.1hh) & Musa-Qala (16.2hh), both served with the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR). Infinity served for 17 yrs & Musa-Qala for 14 yrs respectively.

On arrival, at The Horse Trust, they joined Ex-MWH Quaker & Marquis & their sweet natured herd have already become firm favourites with the Horse Trust’s team.

We wish all of these veteran horses a happy retirement, after years of dedicated service! Thanks to our Veterinary Hospital Manager for sharing this great story with us!

Meet Eron,
This beautiful GSD stole the hearts of many at DATR, before serving a full career as a RAF Police Dog. She is definitely not shy of the media and recently ‘modelled’ 😉 for a popular GSD page, earning GSD of the day!
When she was still working, she also made her own feature video at RAF northolt with her handler Richie. Youtube: ‘It’s a Dog’s Life’

She now lives a lovingly retired life with Richie and his partner Hannah. As you’ll see from the post, Hannah loves Eron more than she could ever imagine; Stories like this melt our heart and inspire our staff. Kudos to the RAF Police for her excellent career #DATR #RAFP #RAVC #MWD #GSD

Happy birthday to the Regimental mascot!

Lance Corporal Emrys Forlan Jones, our Welsh mountain pony, turns seven today.

Jones was recruited to the QDG in 2016 and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal last summer at the Royal Welsh Show.
Farrier Major Mark Holland announced that LCpl Jones "hadn't put a hoof wrong" since his first public appearance at the state opening of the Welsh Assembly in 2016.
