We all need some support and encouragement now and again. Kingsmead School on the Hackney Buzzline is twinned with New Brain School on the Kampala Buzzline in Uganda
So the children in Hackney have made a special message for their friends in Uganda to help them create a pollinator corridor through their neighbourhood.

They directed the film themselves.

Super stars!

Autumn vibes.

Hackney Buzzline and Tree Musketeers volunteers planting a late-flowering understory in the woodland ‘biomes’ in Millfields park.

We put in pollinator plants native to two world regions - Autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) for the Alpine tree circle and Japanese anemones for the East Asian woodland.

Soothing the soul in the autumn sun.

A great spectacle has unfolded on the Hackney Buzzline over recent days. Thousands of Ivy Bees have emerged on the Old Bowling Green on Hackney Downs.

The Bowling Green closed several years ago and has since rewilded to a natural meadow. The Green was laid on a soft and sandy soil which, along with the thatch from the vegetation, provides perfect nesting conditions for ground-nesting Ivy bees.

The Ivy bee is the last bee to emerge in the year - at the same time as the ivy flowers. Dozens of males fly around waiting to pounce on the females when they emerge. The females only mate once, leading to frantic mating scrums as each male tries to be the successful partner. Only then do the females fly off to feed on ivy and dig her nest tunnel.

Hackney Downs is a designated Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. It is important that Hackney Council now protects this unique rewilded area.

Join us for pollinator-friendly planting in the woodland ‘biomes’ on Millfields Park with @ecoactive_uk and @tm_hackney

📆 Saturday 3rd Oct
⏰ 2pm - 4pm
📍Millfields Park

Help ecoACTIVE create a pollinator-friendly understory in the woodland ‘biomes’ on Millfields Park.

Hackney’s Tree Musketeers have planted six biomes with trees from different parts of the world and we’re adding pollinator-friendly flowering plants from each region. We’ve already created a carpet of bluebells in the native English tree biome - providing perfect habitat for ground-nesting solitary bees. We’re now going to put Japenese Anemone plants in the East Asian biome and Sweet Woodruff and Autumn Crocus bulbs in the Alpine biome.

We’ve kicked off a new project in Homerton’s Linzell Estate with corporate volunteers from City-based firm STB. They dug meandering paths through the estate’s community garden that will bring residents into the space to engage with the pollinator features we’re creating there.

We’re working with estate residents and Hackney Council Housing to improve the garden for people and pollinators under their long-term stewardship.

The project is part of the Hackney Buzzline extension along Homerton High Street, supported by the Hackney Community Fund.

Celebrating the greening of Amhurst Road with Hackney Council and the Zero Emissions Network on Car Free Day.

Extensive planting and landscaping has created a linear park along the road. Carriageway space gives way to rain gardens, hedges and ‘play on the way’ spaces for children. A previously traffic-clogged route has turned into a pedestrian and cyclist friendly green corridor.

This is Hackney.

We’ve used felled logs to make a semicircle of seats at our Mabley Green pollinator project - inviting people to sit under a walnut tree and enjoy the space.

Many thanks to volunteers from Clapton Green Gym and Hiscox for their habitat building work.

The latest edition of The Hackney Buzz is out now and can be found on our blog.

Here is a quick look at the “Buzzline Pitstops” we’ve been working on to bring nature and colour back to our community

🌳 Millfields Tree Biomes Our Miyawaki-inspired tree circle is thriving! Our ecologist Gerry spotted solitary mining bees nesting in the 5,000 English bluebells we planted last year.

This autumn, we’re expanding the region-specific biomes by planting Japanese Anemones we grew in the nursery, plus Autumn crocus and Sweet woodruff!

🌸 Clapton Park Estate We’ve built a vibrant chain of pollinator pitstops connecting Millfields to Daubeney Fields.

We restored the wildflower railings on Mandeville Street, bringing life back to the ‘Poppy Estate’ and added bee hotels alongside climate-resilient Mediterranean plants.

🦋 Daubeney Fields Meadows Did you catch the meadows by the new paths this spring?

The wildflower display was absolutely stunning! It’s been buzzing with life, from Blue Mason bees and Red-tailed Bumblebees to beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.

🌻 Concorde Youth Hub Over at the Kingsmead Estate, we installed three new pollinator planters.

In a very special tribute, children from Kingsmead School helped us plant bright yellow sunflowers, grown from seeds collected by a beloved estate resident who sadly recently passed away. 💛 taken in Hackney, London by @daubeneyfields

Creating a new pollinator pit stop on Mabley Green is a year long project and our Hackney Buzzline volunteers have been working on it through the seasons. With Clapton Green Gym, we’re now building a low fence around the habitat site, using collected brash and hazel rods coppiced last winter.

More to come….

Stepping into a bee’s eye in The Pollenarium at the Emerge East festival at Barking Riverside. The installation by artist Luke Jerram scales up a microscopic grain of pollen. Inside you see the world as a bee does. More than 100 lenses create an inverted mosaic of the outside world, mimicking an insect’s compound eye.

The installation aims to raise awareness of the threat to pollinators from pesticide use and the need to rewild land and let nature and insect populations recover.

Surrounding artworks by local schoolchildren.

The Ivy Bees are out! The last bees of the year, they emerge in remarkable synchronicity with the ivy flowers.

These bees were feeding on an ivy patch on Daubeney Fields. It’s the first time I’ve seen them in the park in four years of monitoring. Such a joy. And a great reason not to cut down your ivy.
