So many female Ivy bees nesting in holes in sandy soil. They are solitary bees, so the females nest alone, but next door to each other in large aggregations. Each female Ivy bee collects bright yellow pollen from nearby ivy bushes to provision her nest to feed her young. These Ivy bees are among 100s who have colonised a rewilded bowling green in a park in Hackney, east London.
To find out more about these amazing bees who plaster their nest with an anti bacterial substance like saliva, sign up to my Buzz newsletter. Details in bio

Do you know your bees from your bee mimic? There are plenty of hoverflies mimicking bees and hornets. You'll see them on flowering ivy bushes feeding on nectar, alongside Ivy bees, bumblebees and Honey bees.

Female Ivy bees have now emerged. Mating scrums are happening as thousands of males compete for a female, captured by @daubeneyfields @penny.metal

It is such a treat to see the solitary Ivy bees since they are only here while ivy is flowering. Unlike a colony of Common carder bees whose workers forage from mid summer until now. But I still love watching them forage on Michaelmas daises and late flowering salvias. These bees will soon be gone until next year. (Old queens, workers and males die, while newly mated queens will hunker down for the winter).

Tips on how to tell a Batman hoverfly from an Ivy bee are in this month's Buzz newsletter, along with the best spring bulbs for bees, how to overwinter your bee hotel and how to ID and help bees in October.

Join us for pollinator-friendly planting in the woodland ‘biomes’ on Millfields Park with @ecoactive_uk and @tm_hackney

📆 Saturday 3rd Oct
⏰ 2pm - 4pm
📍Millfields Park

Help ecoACTIVE create a pollinator-friendly understory in the woodland ‘biomes’ on Millfields Park.

Hackney’s Tree Musketeers have planted six biomes with trees from different parts of the world and we’re adding pollinator-friendly flowering plants from each region. We’ve already created a carpet of bluebells in the native English tree biome - providing perfect habitat for ground-nesting solitary bees. We’re now going to put Japenese Anemone plants in the East Asian biome and Sweet Woodruff and Autumn Crocus bulbs in the Alpine biome.

Because we know a woodland is more than just trees

Creating a sitting area next to the new bee bank 🐝 on Mabley Green. Green Gym, corporate volunteers and the buzzline project/ ecoactive - joint work was needed to dig tree stumps into the dry soil. But we made it! Come have a look - and a seat - on your next walk!

The latest edition of The Hackney Buzz is out now and can be found on our blog.

Here is a quick look at the “Buzzline Pitstops” we’ve been working on to bring nature and colour back to our community

🌳 Millfields Tree Biomes Our Miyawaki-inspired tree circle is thriving! Our ecologist Gerry spotted solitary mining bees nesting in the 5,000 English bluebells we planted last year.

This autumn, we’re expanding the region-specific biomes by planting Japanese Anemones we grew in the nursery, plus Autumn crocus and Sweet woodruff!

🌸 Clapton Park Estate We’ve built a vibrant chain of pollinator pitstops connecting Millfields to Daubeney Fields.

We restored the wildflower railings on Mandeville Street, bringing life back to the ‘Poppy Estate’ and added bee hotels alongside climate-resilient Mediterranean plants.

🦋 Daubeney Fields Meadows Did you catch the meadows by the new paths this spring?

The wildflower display was absolutely stunning! It’s been buzzing with life, from Blue Mason bees and Red-tailed Bumblebees to beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.

🌻 Concorde Youth Hub Over at the Kingsmead Estate, we installed three new pollinator planters.

In a very special tribute, children from Kingsmead School helped us plant bright yellow sunflowers, grown from seeds collected by a beloved estate resident who sadly recently passed away. 💛

Ivy bees in my local pocket park today in Hackney feeding on the nectar of ivy flowers. These are males. You can tell by their long antennae. Always so exciting to see them. Females will emerge from their underground nests shortly when more ivy flowers are blooming to collect pollen. These are the last of our 200 + solitary bee species to emerge in the UK before winter.
The final photo is a honey bee, of which there are plenty on the ivy bushes too. Can you tell the difference?
Tips to tell an ivy bee from a honey bee are in my latest Buzz newsletter. Details in bio.
Fascinating Ivy bee fact: A European species, first discovered in the UK in 2001 in Dorset, it has now spread as far as Scotland.

Hackney Buzzline volunteers visited the stunning Hilldrop garden in Essex - to soak up inspiration from the home of John Little and Fiona Crummay.

We learned how gardeners can embody and facilitate biodiversity through careful stewardship of green spaces. Great ecological differences don’t arise from planting alone but from the structural layout and materials and substrates used. From small cracks and crevices to big standing wood statements, heterogeneous habitats are the main drivers of pollinator diversity.

Thanks to our volunteers for sharing their photos and learnings and to John and Fiona for sharing their garden.

The last two Fridays, we helped @ecoactive_uk with their 🐝🐝@buzzlines_international project, creating a new habitat for pollinators and other insects on Mabley Green. Some of helped building sand walls and the others cut branches that can then be woven into a fence on top of the walls. Really exiting project and we’re happy to now be part of it! Of course we had our usual tea break and a little stretching ritual before going home. Thanks Gerry for getting us engaged and teaching us new skills!

We have another addition to the #HackneyBuzzline Community Map! 🐝

We have a small garden (approx 1m x 2m) in which my toddler very enthusiastically planted an entire bag of seed balls meaning about 5000 seeds have been sprouting throughout the year. It’s been quite incredible. We also have four trees in pots: apple, pear, cherry and plum. Along with tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and a few other plants crammed in. We feel so lucky to have this space and really enjoy it.
