One of the most common mistakes I see with Foil Drive is reaching for the throttle the moment you fall behind a bump. Feels like the right move. It’s not.Your motor isn’t going to get you back on that wave once you’re behind it. The wave is simply moving faster than your assist can push you. What actually works is getting up on foil and pumping as hard as you can. When you’re high on the mast and pumping well, you’re generating way more speed than the motor ever will. Foil choice does play into it, your mast height, wing and glide all matter, but as a general rule if you find yourself behind a bump the answer is fly first, pump hard, and then use your assist to support that if you miss the bump.Drop a comment if you’re guilty of this ;)#FoilDrive #EfoilLife #WingFoil #FoilSurf #FoilTips PumpFoil FoilDriveAssist LearnToFoil FoilLife CoastalRiding by @dave_west_foils

Here’s how I get over an hour on a sport battery with a foil drive. 1. I always use a wave to get going. No matter what I’m doing, no matter how inconsistent the waves are, I will always use a bump or a wave to get going. I literally never flat water start in a session. This is a huge battery saver and something any of you could implement in your sessions. No matter how small of a push it gives you, it all helps to make your battery last longer.2. I’ll always pump and link throughout the session. Firstly, it ensures that you get a really good workout and improves your pumping skills. On a sport battery, I find it’s almost exactly the same as pumping without a foil drive on. Challenge yourself to pump and link more in your sessions. It will increase your run time, increase your workout, increase your abilities, and it’s more satisfying. According to Bennets, so long as you pump past nearby surfers, you won’t get in trouble for using a motorised foils near them ;)@foildrive Max w/sport batteryHP Motor@amosshapes Kruzer 4”11 34L@codefoils integrated 17cm850s 142ar large fuse by @dave_west_foils

Little boards are tricky to get going. High reward once you’re up. However - if you go too small on the foil and it’s too hard to get up then you’ll safety surf - so it defeats the purpose of the smaller board. 720s on this day was too small and meant I had to work super hard to get up. Once up I safety surfed. Picking gear is about right intentions for the session to Is it for training, relaxing, progressing or shredding. by @dave_west_foils

One of the simplest ways to instantly improve your foiling… ride higher. When you’re riding high on the mast, your foil is working at its most efficient. Less drag, more glide, more speed. It’s one of those small adjustments that makes a massive difference.A lot of riders focus on everything else first — turns, pumping, power — but if you’re not consistently riding high, you’re leaving speed and efficiency on the table. This becomes even more important when you’re not using a foildrive setup. The better you can control your ride height, the more efficiently you move — and the longer, faster, and smoother your runs become.Using a foildrive setup is a great training tool. It gives you the support to practise these key skills in a more forgiving way… but the goal is always to transfer that control when you’re riding without it.If you want one thing to focus on next session: Ride high. Stay high. Get comfortable there. It’s a game changer — and it’s something I coach every rider I work with. by @dave_west_foils
