Such an honour for us this past weekend to have been given the opportunity to present @therealmargaretatwood with her 1939 (year of her birth) Corona Zephyr typewriter that we fully restored, and custom hand painted,in a tribute to her career.
Many thanks to @notianwilliams and @vancouverwritersfest for making this happen.
When Brendan @oldschooltypewriters and I started the project, we found the 1939 machine was a tough restoration. As well as sticking keys, broken springs, broken handle, the case was a challenge. Being fragile and well worn, we decided on painting the lid rather than covering it, and had the idea of painting well read Atwood novels, stacked in the case indicating “stories inside”. The illusion worked out very well.

How would I capture her entire career in images on such a small typewriter shell?
I referenced a photo of Ms Atwood sitting at a typewriter (1960’s IBM Selectric) from there, the idea of pages flying from the typewriter depicting original book covers came to life. I wanted to give the idea of words flowing with creativity. 📄📄📄
We are so proud that this is another tribute machine to an iconic Canadian. Terry Fox 🇨🇦 Margaret Atwood 🇨🇦
Hope you enjoy this little insight and video.

Remembering the Greatest @muhammadali today.. it’s been 10 years since we lost him.. but his legend lives on.

This custom Olympia typewriter tells his story with news clippings. And is also a nod to sports and news reporting of the day.

Hand painted tribute to Jim Brown who we lost on this day May 18 2023.

He is still today widely considered one of the greatest @nfl players in history. 1957-1965 with the @clevelandbrowns selected to Pro Bowl and All-Pro every season he played. NFL AP MVP 3 times and won an @nfl championship in 1964.
HOF 1971 🏆🏈
After football he moved into the acting world with 53 acting credits and leading roles.
During his career in the 50’s he was one of only a few prominent African American athletes to speak up on racial issues and was a vocal part of the civil rights movement.

Really proud to partner up with @brady.oliveira and @alexblumberg for a special project in aid of dog rescue. Some custom painted CFL footballs will be auctioned off in April in support of dog rescue and the launch of a new CBC tv show “Must Love Dogs”

Huge thanks to Brady and Alex for letting me be part of something so meaningful. Hoping these pieces help bring more awareness and support to the rescue work behind Must Love Dogs.

I’ll share more details as the other footballs 🏈 are created!

Handpainted official leather CFL football.

New commission J Cole custom hand painted Nike Dunks.

Definitely a challenge painting over seams and swoosh.. but I am quite pleased how these portraits turned out. 🎨👟
For portraits this small I like to sketch the images with a fine brush and angelus 2 thin product. I don’t use an airbrush or stencils.. I prefer to use fine brushes and paint in the same style I paint large pieces, but on a miniature scale.

I really like the black and white on the monochrome Dunks.
What do you think of these?

So hey! 2 dear friends, @davebenning.customs & @orondekairi and I have started a video podcast! This for me as an introvert, & listener rather than talker, is scary, but I’m doing it- kind of like Bob in What about Bob- I’m sailing! I’m sailing! & having friends to cheer each other on is huge, lemme tell ya.

We all realized that we work alone most of the time, as most artists do, and it can get lonely. And it’s easy to get stuck inside your head or spin your wheels with nobody to bounce ideas off or bring you back above water as needed (raises both hands)! So we decided to get together once a week online & just chat about whatever we’re doing, or thinking, or working on, or whatever comes up as we go about our business of making art. Favorite art supplies? Doing shows, conventions, commissions, markets? Sharing on socials, or not or…? Artist life ups & downs?

& we thought hey, what we’re talking about is relevant to most artists & maybe they’d like to hear about it too & chat about these things as well? And so the Sunday Night Art Exchange came to be.
Along with ourselves, we have plans on bringing in some of our favourite creative people to chat about *their* lives and creative businesses in all different fields as well.

No gatekeeping, no bullshit, no selling, just real people talking about our real experiences in the art world and business.

And, we’d love to have you join us in the conversation! Got a question for us? Want us to delve into something in particular?

Hope to see you there, find a link to our Youtube channel in my bio, and if you love it, please subscribe so you can catch every new episode! by @davebenning.customs
