Turbid Times: "Glacial pace" gains a new meaning.

When I was back in Squamish last summer, I went to the Mamquam River that runs through town to cool off. I was used to enjoying the natural air conditioning system when it got hot, and the meditative process of cold dips throughout the year.

I have dipped and kayaked the river at flood, low flow, winter flow and summer for many years.

Although it was still pretty cold this summer, it didn't do what it normally does. The experience was that of jumping in a milky bath, not a pristine, clear glacial fed river. So I followed it upstream.

I tried to go to the source, to the Mamquam Icefield, but it was socked in. So, with the help of @davecpearson 📸 and @rick_willison ✈ I got to see above it.

I spoke with glaciologists, the Department of Fisheries and others about what they are noticing, and what it might mean.

Unfortunately, I learned that it's a sign our glaciers are in their last years. The wildfires have deposited ash on their surface and our summers are heating up, which speeds up the melt and means the layers that are melting now are deeper and have more sediment in them.

This will have impacts on our water 🌊, our power💡, our skiing ⛷️ and our salmon 🎣.

Here are the results of a great day out filming with @flowmotionaerials and the amazing team from @islandraptors; @seanbrb & @birdchaserbrys, and of course the main talent; Hercules the Bald Eagle

We came together in the spring to test our long-lens FPV dual-op gimbal rig. This clip was shot at 135mm, however since then we have been able to successfully push the system to 300mm FF equivalent.

Over the last two years I have been working on a passion project alongside @flowmotionaerials. We set ourselves the goal of developing a system that would allow us to film birds in ways that haven’t been possible before.

Here is a sneak peak at the results. With an equivalent focal length of 150mm to 300mm the system allows for the filming of birds and other animals at safe distances while still remaining agile enough to follow fast and dynamic behaviours.

This shot was taken earlier in the year as a ‘proof of concept’ with the amazing team at @islandraptors

Island of the Sea Wolves is a 3-part series that follows a year in the life of animals on Vancouver Island. Launching globally on Netflix today.

I was lucky enough to spend several months in the field last year filming alongside a great team.

Glad to see it all come together at last.
