How does caring for something feel better than owning a bunch of stuff? 🤷🏽

How does a seemingly random meeting with a day laborer in Laguna Canyon over 25 years ago become an international nonprofit, Growers First, connecting indigenous coffee, agave and hibiscus farmers in Oaxaca to U.S. buyers?

Years later, he and a crew of volunteers built Bombay Beach Arts & Culture by the Salton Sea: a community cafe, art and ceramics classes, monthly feasts and a garden.

Dave is a prolific leader in creating community-driven enterprises that shape cultures and inspire people. His stories are heart-opening, tragic, and hilarious. Sometimes all three at once.

A small grocery store moment yesterday changed how I think about plastic and my health. I was standing at checkout when the cashier inormed me that plastic bags have become illegal in California as of January 1, 2026. I handed her my reusable cloth sack. In front of me was and entire wall, floor to ceiling, stacked with water in plastic bottles. Hundreds of them. Thousands of pounds of plastic. All sold as health.

And that’s when the absurdity hit me.

We’ve decided plastic bags are dangerous enough to regulate at checkout but drinking water wrapped in plastic gets a free pass.

Same material.
Same polymers.
Same chemicals.
Different optics.

That moment stuck with me.

Because over the last year, the science around microplastics has become impossible to ignore: They’re found in bottled water. They’ve been detected in blood, lungs, placentas, and major organs The body doesn’t metabolize plastic, it accumulates it

This isn’t about environmental virtue signaling.
It’s about biology. So I made a New Year’s resolution: I’m eliminating anything packaged in plastic from entering my body.

Not perfectly.
Not fanatically.
But intentionally.

Filtered water instead of bottled.
Glass, stainless, ceramic when possible.
Less convenience. More awareness.

Because if we’re being honest, the biggest exposure risk isn’t the plastic bag carrying groceries. It’s the plastic touching what we ingest every single day.

I don’t know if this decision will add years to my life. But I do know this: Reducing chronic exposure to something that doesn’t belong in the human body feels like a good bet.

Sometimes “health” isn’t about adding supplements or gadgets. Sometimes it’s about removing the quiet things we normalized, even when they’re sold as pure, clean, and convenient. Especially then.
