How does caring for something feel better than owning a bunch of stuff? 🤷🏽

How does a seemingly random meeting with a day laborer in Laguna Canyon over 25 years ago become an international nonprofit, Growers First, connecting indigenous coffee, agave and hibiscus farmers in Oaxaca to U.S. buyers?

Years later, he and a crew of volunteers built Bombay Beach Arts & Culture by the Salton Sea: a community cafe, art and ceramics classes, monthly feasts and a garden.

Dave is a prolific leader in creating community-driven enterprises that shape cultures and inspire people. His stories are heart-opening, tragic, and hilarious. Sometimes all three at once.

Yesterday we had our second meetup of the Grow Winter Quarter — and it was something special.

Real connection.
With ourselves.
With each other.
With nature.

We hiked barefoot through the hills of Laguna, stopped at a beautiful lookout, and dropped into some visualization, meditation, and breathwork together.

This is what Grow is about.

We meet once a month in person.
We meet twice a month on Zoom.
And we stay connected daily inside Volley.

With about six weeks left in this Winter Quarter, the wins have been undeniable:

Energy is rebounding.
Chronic pain is resolving.
Lean muscle is going up.
Unwanted fat is coming down.
And most importantly — people are remembering how good it actually feels to live in a regulated, strong, clear body.

Spring Quarter begins mid-April.

At the beginning of every workout, we sit and feel where the breath is moving in our body. We aim to create expansion and mobility through the lower ribs — accessing the lower lungs and reinforcing healthy breath mechanics.

We usually start with a box or triangle breath for 2–4 minutes, then move into a faster-paced breathing pattern to stimulate and upregulate the nervous system. This primes the body for movement. There are a bunch of different patterns we use at MODIS depending on the day.

On the flip side, we always end with a down-regulating breath to bring the nervous system back into balance. You can literally tell your body it’s time to recover through how you breathe.

If you skip this step, your system can stay stuck in a sympathetic state — which isn’t ideal post-workout. Breath is one of the most powerful tools we have for long-term health, recovery, and resilience.
