POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In my almost-15 year career as a professional filmmaker, it’s been exceptionally rare to be commissioned to undertake a ‘dream’ project. This documentary I was honored to direct for @fujifilmx_us was exactly that.

How else to describe a project set in one of my favorite places on the planet (Tokyo), to be given creative freedom to document the “photographic growth” of a great friend and photographer / teacher Jarrett Esaw, @nocolor_jte, alongside another amazing friend and tirelessly working DP extraordinaire @kevin_cinema featuring one of the world’s photographic masters and long standing ex-@natgeo legends, @samabellteacher.

This project wasn’t just about the growth of Jarrett as a photographer and teacher, it was also about legacy, the passing on of knowledge and what that means, and larger life lessons as a whole, and i can say without any doubt, we all grew on this very special assignment.

Sam was truly one of the most inspiring and kind figures, generous beyond measure with his time and knowledge. It was an amazing experience to see Jarrett’s growth and hear him talk about what his students at @penumbrafoundation and @icp will gain as a result of his own insight over the course of the project, and to also see a genuine friendship develop between him and Sam.

A huge labor of love, i am forever grateful for these miraculous moments where it feels like i am extraordinarily lucky to be living out a small part of the destiny i wished and hoped for as a kid, to tell meaningful stories like these alongside my friends, to document our growth as creatives yes, but to tell stories about powerful human connection first and foremost.

In our brief lifetimes, when i look back over my timeline, it will be these moments i think about and will be forever grateful for.

Honored to have directed the launch film for the just-announced @fujifilmx_us X-E5 ahd the new XF23mm 2.8 R WR Pancake Lens.

I had the pleasure of directing and editing this short, documenting Melissa Breyer (@melbreyer) one of the most talented NYC-based street photographers that I know. I have been a fan of Melissa’s work for half a decade or more, and being given the opportunity to watch her make images and speak to her about her philosophy and approach to seeing and making photos was just incredible.

It’s projects like this one that are those rare gems where everything comes together and where I realize how lucky and honored I am to do this as a job - an amazing, inspiring talent in Melissa, a subject and backdrop of New York City that I spend all my time exploring and photographing, a genre of photography that i’ve been obsessed with since as long as i can remember, a focus of how we see and the inspiration we draw from to express our creative vision, a crew who is a dream and absolute pleasure to collaborate with, and a client that doesn’t just permit but insists we go all out and make a story in our vision.

These gems of projects are rare diamonds and don’t come along often, and to have our little film selected for the global launch announcement of these new products is nothing short of amazing and a testament to the power of a great collaborative team.

This one was special, thank you all ❤️

This was easily one of the most special projects I’ve ever worked on.

Bryan and his son Miles created incredible imagery in White Sands NM as part of their “Traveler” project for the release of the new @fujifilmx_us GFX 100S 2 camera and GF 500mm lens.

More than just beautiful imagery, this was an exploration of (re)tapping into childlike wonder, as well as a way to improve on generational parenting cycles.

Bryan intentions involved Miles throughout - building gear, scouting, concepts for images and planning intricate shots around the lunar cycle. All the images you see Bryan got in camera, he’s a genius. Seeing him and Miles work and play on the dunes from first to last light was truly special to witness and be a part of.

By deeply involving his son, Bryan strove to build an even deeper bond with Miles, more than he himself had experienced with his own father. It was a beautiful thing to witness in real time, and to realize we were all creating work that would be a reminder of the impact of this project on both Bryan and Miles’ lives forever. This project crystallized for me why I do what I do.

Bryan successfully wove in themes of Chinese art and triptych storytelling through a series of 3 images showcasing a story that represents his own childhood, his own escape into creativity and artistry, and finally a note of positive hope for the future, a shining beacon of light symbolizing a brighter future. His work is phenomenal and is on permanent display at @fotocarenyc.

I’ve been wanting to work on a project that explores father and son relationships for years, and specifically how one father (in this case Bryan) aims to raise the bar on what good (or better) fatherhood can look like. This was that project for me. Huge thanks to Bryan and his fam, and the team that made all of this possible:

Beyond honored to have been asked to DP/assist/be talent in the @fujifilmx_us subway takeover campaign for FUJIKINA NYC 2026, to have been selected to have a print displayed in the subway and to also have been included in the incredible FUJIKINA Community Gallery space at 54 Ludlow St as part of “Dave’s Corner” for the entire 3 day event duration.

What you see in the campaign is a bunch of friends doing what we always do - hanging out, exploring and creating photos together. Authentic community is rare but a beautiful powerful thing and I’m so lucky to have these people in my life.

If you have’t signed up yet, you can find the link in the bio or just search “FUJIKINA NYC” and you’ll find the sign up page. I’ll be in the community gallery at 54 Ludlow all weekend long chatting to some of the most talented and lovely photographers and people you could ever hope to meet.

Not only will we be celebrating and discussing what 200 years of photographic legacy means today, but we will be celebrating the power and strength of community spirit and support.

Shout out to @vuhlandes for the great campaign spot and again to my friends and fam at Fujifilm US for this incredible honor to be part of FUJIKINA NYC 2026 ❤️

I’m TRULY honored to be hosting “Dave’s Corner” at @fujifilmx_us FUJIKINA NYC 2026 expo this week (Oct 16–18) in the Lower East Side. I’ll be hosting a series of one-on-one conversations with some extraordinary image makers and industry titans.

FUJIKINA celebrates 200 years of photography - what that legacy means for all of us as image makers, and what it means to be part of a photographic community. New York has centuries of supportive photo communities that we are building upon this week.

I didn’t go to photography or film school. The only reason I’ve been able to build a career over 15 years in the most competitive market in the world is the generosity of the people who came before me.

Without community, we can’t survive, let alone thrive.
That’s why working with Fujifilm for the past half decade has meant so much - their commitment to building a supportive community, especially those who are just starting out, finding their way, and who are often lacking the resources to learn and grow, is the reason I’m so grateful I get to work with them. As we support others, so we grow ourselves.

In these talks, I’m going to peel back the layers with some of the truly best people I know: how they found and shaped their path, whose legacy helped shaped them, and what they hope to leave behind for others to come.

You must register for the festival to attend. Grab your ticket, then book the talks (or add to waitlist if they are full which I think many now are) - link is in the bio.

Even if you can’t make a talk, please come find me in the Community Gallery at 54 Ludlow St and tell me about your own photographic journey. Sharing our stories and passion for photography is what gives this community its life and bonds us all, and I’d genuinely love to hear your story. ❤️

📍 Community Gallery, 54 Ludlow St, LES
🗓 Oct 16–18 (full schedule and talks can be booked as add-ons with your ticket in link in bio)

Incredibly honored to be hosting “Dave’s Corner” at the upcoming @fujifilmx_us FUJIKINA NYC 2026 photo expo October 16-18th in the heart of the Lower East Side, NYC.

**more info and full schedule + entry tickets here: https://shopusa.fujifilm-x.com/fujikina/ **

FUJIKINA NYC 2026 is a MASSIVE 3 day event celebrating 200 years of photography, with 100+ activations across 9 venues hosting talks, photowalks and activities from some of the very best in the industry.

I will be in the Community Gallery (at Hashimoto Gallery), 54 Ludlow St for all 3 days hosting conversations with some truly incredible people / photographers surrounded by large prints selected by community members of what the concept of “inheritance” means (honored to have had one of my images included amongst this talented bunch).

I’ll also be leading a discussion on what the world’s first ever photo, taken in 1826, can teach us about photography craft and practice 200 years later.

If you want to know how to improve your craft, connect with the community, be (and stay) inspired, work as a professional, or simply better understand the craft and YOUR photographic legacy, you can’t miss this one. Be sure to come through and see me at the Community Gallery! by @davegeffin
