I find time and again that collaboration is key to successful commercial projects. It doesn’t matter the size of the production, it matters more what we’re all driving towards, creatively and professionally. I’m reminded of this whenever I work with and hand over my footage to @taylortupy to see what he does with it. This was a commercial I shot at the end of last year for jewelry brand @iseirajewelry directed by @taylortupy who also edited what I shot here. Simple, effective and executed to a clear vision, with full creative control thanks to a trusting client, these are often some of the best jobs in my opinion because it feels like we get to explore more than just “how we make a video for a brand”. We actually are lucky enough to get to explore our own style and aesthetic and how that fits into what we are showcasing. These sorts of projects can reveal aspects of the work that speak more deeply about our own personal direction or travel, often showcasing elements that weren’t as apparent at the outset, or become something of the fabric of the piece during the shoot itself, which can be its own voyage of discovery. Working with others and how our work can feed in to one another and what happens to that work after the shoot is something I’m very interested in because it reminds me how these incredible small creative teams we are often part of for a very short time, can deliver exponentially more than the sum of their individual parts when they work together, even just over the course of a few hours or a day. Creative individuals collaborating together in this way is a key part of the human experience for me, and why I do what I do, and I feel lucky to be in this environment whenever I step onto a set. As we emerge out of a protracted 2 year period of on-and-off human contact and connection, these sorts of projects with talented creative team members serve as clear reminders for me of what’s important and what I want to continue to drive towards in my work.
