Dave Karger shares the plot behind one of his very favorite films, Children of a Lesser God (1986), and begins explaining why this film and the performances by the three main stars, Marlee Matlin, William Hurt, and Piper Laurie, deeply resonated with him at the perfect time in his life. Dave talks more about his love for Randa Haines’ Oscar- winning drama in our interview and even further in the introduction of his new book 50 Oscar Nights: Contemporary Stars on Their Favorite Classic Films, which you should all purchase now! A video edit highlighting his excellent new book is in the works and will be posted soon 👀

Dave Karger reminisces about how he developed a love of classic cinema while taking film courses at Duke University. It was there Dave was introduced to films that are widely considered some of the best in cinema like On the Waterfront (1954) and Citizen Kane (1940), but Otto Preminger’s 1944 film noir Laura especially left an impression on him namely because of the film’s stars, Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney, and David Raskin’s score. Fun fact: Dave learned to play Raskin’s “Laura” score on the piano and has since performed it for a crowd of TCM viewers!

When TCM first launched on cable television in 1994, Dave Karger was just beginning his career as an intern at Entertainment Weekly and never did it cross his mind that he’d be a regular host on the beloved channel nearly 25 years later. Dave explains how he slowly began his transition from writing magazine articles to making on- screen appearances as a film expert and how today, while regularly introducing classic films and interviewing stars like Angelina Jolie and George Clooney, he has returned to his original passion of writing about cinema through writing two books.

A big thanks to my old friend @bravoandy for having me behind the bar on @bravowwhl last night to talk about 50 MOVIE NIGHTS. Andy is one of the 50 celebs featured in the book alongside many of his great pals: Anderson Cooper, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Kelly Ripa, Jon Hamm, John Benjamin Hickey, and Molly Shannon. It was a major thrill to see him holding the book on the show we watch every night. by @davekarger

Fact: Without Paul Rudd, my new @tcm book 50 MOVIE NIGHTS would not exist. He was the first person who agreed to be interviewed for it, and although he didn’t know it, he served as a pied piper to help me attract all the other phenomenal people in its pages. Plus his superhuman wife Julie even came up with book’s title. Last night Paul outdid himself by joining me for a ridiculously fun conversation at the beautiful @rizzolibookstore. I’m so grateful for his friendship and support for the last 30 years. He’s not on social media but if you see him, tell him I say thank you for everything, would you please? taken in Rizzoli Bookstore by @davekarger

Dave Karger remembers legendary designer and friend Bob Mackie: "He was just the loveliest guy. And for how big and wild his costume designs here, he was such a sweet, and unassuming, and modest guy, so I'm going to miss him a lot."

Karger interviewed Mackie many times for Turner Classic Movies, and also interviewed him for his book "50 Movie Nights," which compiles 50 interviews with movie stars about their favorite classic movies.

Mackie's death at age 87 was announced on September 14th, 2026. by @davekarger
