The British Crown banned poitín on Christmas Eve 1661, and for the next 336 years, the people who made it took to the hills of Donegal, Connemara and the Mournes to continue the tradition. The Crown sent mercenaries who were rewarded based on the equipment they confiscated. They kicked down doors, smashed stills. People lost their lives protecting their right to make a spirit from their own grain on their own land.
