‘The Organ At Farr Cottage’ has sold to a VIP collector of my work as a housewarming gift for a friend. How thoughtful.

This sculpture is a collection of parts from an Organ dating back to the 1860s.

They don’t make them like they used to!

The Hills are Alive.

Edit 30. David Cox, Olinda

David was that kid who loved dismantling things, curious about anything with moving parts. He never imagined he’d spend his days transforming old family heirlooms into artwork commissioned by people across the world, from Australia to the USA and Kuala Lumpur.

“If you imagine a piano, with the top open and two legs sticking out the top — that’s me, digging through, finding the things I need.”

David studied interior design at university but built a career in finance before later managing a major tourism organisation. For years he lived the busy professional life in St Kilda, travelling the world for work. After a weekend in the Dandenong Ranges, he and his wife jotted down three addresses on a yellow sticky note and soon he was standing in what would become their Olinda home, looking out over the ranges.

Commuting became part of everyday life and, like many Melburnians in 2020, he was confined to his home during lockdowns. With more time on his hands, David found himself tinkering with items collected over many years. “I feel the need to try and salvage what I can.” He began creating phoenix pieces that give discarded piano parts a second life, restoring them rather than sending them to landfill. A friend commissioned a piece for his music studio, and demand grew.

“I feel privileged to have access to all these old bits and bobs that would otherwise not exist or cost a fortune to repair. It’s nice that they’re given a new purpose.”

Once a year David participates in the @burrinja @openstudios event, opening his home workshop to those wanting to learn more. You can also see his work at @david.cox.art or by visiting @hardroadbrewing Bayswater, @earthlypleasurescafe Belgrave and @themotorist Gembrook — all featuring his pieces on their walls.

Introducing ‘La Phénix D’encre’ made from the ink stained black keyboard of a 1917 Kohl upright piano, which has since retired from playing. Adorned in a centre of 1870s brass pump organ reeds, an antique mantle clock face, and the pianos own brass candle sconces and award winning badge at its heart.

This assemblage sculpture will be on show at our ‘Lustre’ pop up exhibition in Armadale for the upcoming 2 weeks along with the phenominal artists @elizabeth.gleeson.artist & @gerard.russo.art.

The exhibition will run from 18-30 May. 929 High Street Armadale.
Come and have a look for yourself.

Unsure about what gift to get that music loving loved one this year? Lately I’ve been having fun making framed assemblage sculptures primarily from piano and organ parts, plus a few rare items I find in my travels. They are all around A4 size and all are available until they are not. Most will be between $190-$390 depending.
Get in touch if you’d like to know more.

‘Purple Heart’ is a new ‘Wreath’ creation, made from the keys off a 1909 Windsor Parlour Pump Organ. It is 84cm is diameter and pops right out of the wall thanks to its purple-ish mahogany stain. I’m really chuffed with this one. Available until it’s not.

“Pulvis et Umbra Susmus”
“We are but dust and shadow”

Signifying the fragility, brevity, and mortality of human life.
Altar, tombstone, ofrenda, memorial, gateway, trātÌŁaka?
An assemblage sculpture made almost exclusively of antique piano and organ parts, and found objects, featuring a bronze-dust-laced resin broken-winged seraphim at the centre.
A shrine for reflection.

Now available to see at @burrinja as part of the Continuum exhibition on for a few weeks. Come to my studio to see more as part of the @openstudios program 21, 22 & 28, 29 March.
