The Hills are Alive.

Edit 30. David Cox, Olinda

David was that kid who loved dismantling things, curious about anything with moving parts. He never imagined he’d spend his days transforming old family heirlooms into artwork commissioned by people across the world, from Australia to the USA and Kuala Lumpur.

“If you imagine a piano, with the top open and two legs sticking out the top — that’s me, digging through, finding the things I need.”

David studied interior design at university but built a career in finance before later managing a major tourism organisation. For years he lived the busy professional life in St Kilda, travelling the world for work. After a weekend in the Dandenong Ranges, he and his wife jotted down three addresses on a yellow sticky note and soon he was standing in what would become their Olinda home, looking out over the ranges.

Commuting became part of everyday life and, like many Melburnians in 2020, he was confined to his home during lockdowns. With more time on his hands, David found himself tinkering with items collected over many years. “I feel the need to try and salvage what I can.” He began creating phoenix pieces that give discarded piano parts a second life, restoring them rather than sending them to landfill. A friend commissioned a piece for his music studio, and demand grew.

“I feel privileged to have access to all these old bits and bobs that would otherwise not exist or cost a fortune to repair. It’s nice that they’re given a new purpose.”

Once a year David participates in the @burrinja @openstudios event, opening his home workshop to those wanting to learn more. You can also see his work at @david.cox.art or by visiting @hardroadbrewing Bayswater, @earthlypleasurescafe Belgrave and @themotorist Gembrook — all featuring his pieces on their walls.

Hey guys, here in just a few more photos of the Melbourne Fair that we just did. We’re actually having meetings this week to see if we can get a stall at the affordable art show in Melbourne and in Sydney so hopefully we can get those and that’ll give us something to look forward to and get some of the Artist names into different states which would be amazing. Hope you guys have an amazing day and I look to hear from you with your thoughts regarding Paintings comments whatever it’s always good to get the positive and the negative sending love. #Painting #Portrait#Female #Gallery

Hey guys, hope you had an awesome weekend. We have finally unpacked all the Paintings from bringing them back from the Melbourne Fair. Ava and I was shocked on how much work there was done to pack up that whole show of 80 Paintings and a roughly about eight Artist. I was so proud of myself and my working team I’m getting it all done and unfortunately, yes that’s what I went to hospital and the guys had to take over. They did an amazing job. The feedback I got even to the stage it was the best stalls there so now on Tuesday we’ve got the professional photographer coming in to take five photos of each Painting I’ve got here which is about 450 Paintings so you can imagine how much work that is to pick up the painting to put it on the easel. Take five shots then put it down then do the next one and be able to do that without damaging them is quite an art to it. I must admit I get a bit frustrated sitting in my wheelchair not being able to help because I know that stuff I’d be really good at organising but I suppose I can still do it but just in a different way people say to me they like when I give instructions especially on my Care etc. If I had to explain to a new person and I wanted to get into my Wheelchair. I’d tell him just work slow and listen to me and we can do it and at the end of it they’re absolute sucked but they actually did it. So all these 99 paintings are for sale and extremely good prices as we need to clean out and start bringing in some of the new Artist that I’ve been talking to for the last two years that have been waiting all this time. That’s what stage it’s got to the people are asking me to represent them from all around the world but I can’t do everyone. I’ll just gotta do a certain amount at a certain time so if you’re interested in any of these Paintings or you want to come to the Gallery in about a week time when everything is all set up again, it’s gonna look amazing. So please share and tag this post because obviously that’ll get out to a lot of people and if I can make just a couple of sales to keep the Gallery going that would be amazing sending all my love to everyone#Gallery #Painting #Artwork #Art #F

Hey guys, as you know it won’t be long until we hit spring so I thought I’d start doing my spring cleaning early. These are the storerooms we have for the Paintings that can’t find room to be hung at this stage. Over the next two weeks, we will be re-hanging the whole Gallery after just doing the Melbourne Fair. Which took a lot of work and teamwork and money to get all the Artwork down to Caulfield racecourse set up and then pack it up and bring it all back again. I definitely learned a lot from doing this fair and realised it’s not the right one for us so I’m just literally gonna go back to running my Gallery from my Gallery and just stay with the artists or represent in the people that believe in me. Is time for a big change and I’m actually changing Care agencies as I’m just due to get some better Care as it’s been very difficult the last year or so so if you want a private viewing when all the paintings are hung up etc start making your bookings now as I honestly feel good about the artwork I bought for the fair and now it’s time for the public that haven’t seen it yet to see it. I promise you you won’t regret it. #StoleRoom #Rooms #Storage #Paintings #Artwork.

Hey guys, here is some more videos and photos of the Melbourne Fair that we held last weekend. It has been six months Work staying up till 5 o’clock in the morning to get such a ride range of Artwork for this show. I ended up hiring two large stalls representing my very finest artists. With big names. As you walked into the fair and you come around the corner or you could see was my stand as it was so bright clean and beautiful Artwork. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go as my Care Agency couldn’t get the Support to take me. I told them Mos how important this fair meant to me mentally and financially. I don’t even wanna tell you the guys the cost of hiring the two shows even just to get the Paintings wrapped up delivered there and brought back home was thousands. Three staff working non-stop for six days. The motel fees for my staff to stay at so they could do the long hours and not have to worry about getting home. I really don’t wanna talk about money etc. I put it this way. It was well over $20,000 just to put the show on and guess what we only sold $800. They’re saying the times we’re having at the moment has been one of the hardest times for a lot of galleries as you know they’re closing down and they just can’t survive. Explain I just stuck in bed staring at YouTube while all this activity was going around me but when I was in the hospital there’s no TV or anything to do as they took all the TVs away from the spinal ward which is pretty crazy as that’s the only thing we can do in Hospital so I laid there in Hospital just thinking about the stall and how we’re gonna plan it all out advertising it giving away free tickets everything so do $800 is just so surreal for me. The one I can’t afford to lose that type of money in such a small business even though it’s growing a lot hence why I now have Paula Sutton and also David Turner working for me. We’ve got so many new plans of doing a podcast . #Podcast #TheMelbourneFair #Melbourne #ArtFair #GalleryPodcast

Hey guys, in 30 years of running my own businesses the last six months has been pretty intense. Staying up to 5 o’clock every morning talking to new artist from all around the world to create an amazing show at the Melbourne Fair which finished last Sunday. I want to thank my regular friends and clients that went to it especially just to see my two stalls. There is no doubt that my stalls stood out. And I’ve had some great feedback regarding my staff so thanks very much guys. It makes me proud of you. We’ve both got some follow-ups to do which is great and got some Commission paintings to do for people. Please share this post so people that didn’t make it to the Melbourne show can at least watch some of these videos and photos which I’m very proud of. I thought it came up an amazing way. I had all plans of being there even though I haven’t been outside for three years. I was gonna push myself but in the end I just couldn’t make it. I gave it. Everything I got and it was shattering to spend all that time and all that money and not even get to see my own show in real life. I was actually stuck in bed for the last two months in today’s the first day I’ve sat in my chair for all that time. I’m sitting here and absolute agony as my body hasn’t moved at all for those two months apart when I get turned side-by-side to make sure I don’t get pressure souls. So the next two weeks we will be setting up my Gallery at 20 Alexandra Street Saint Kilda East. Invitation only. So we can spend a good hour together looking at all the Artwork. Oove got six people inquiring about Paintings and getting some commission Paintings from just social media. Next time I think I’ll do the affordable art show maybe more chance of selling #MelbourneFair #Melbourne #ArtShowHashtagPaintingsHashtagAntiques.

Hi guys, hope you’re having a smashing day. All this is one day that I probably wouldn’t expect to have two years ago. I thought all those days were gonna be out of my life. And what I’m talking about yes a babies and children. I’ve always loved kids and I still do and the hardest thing incoming a Quadriplegic as I said is not being a father. The Stevenson name will also finish because I haven’t had babies. I sort of feel guilty even though this accident was to do with road rage and I was nothing a part of it. It was two other cars that were road raging and smashed into my car by Mistake. I remember laying there when I came out of a coma but if I couldn’t have kids, I was thinking of adopting. That was before I learnt about what by the rest of my life was gonna be like and unfortunately there would be no way as a single man bringing up a kid expecting my support workers to be changing nappies etc. So as you can imagine I’ve lost a lot of things due to that road rage accident but days like this when I’m stuck in bed and I’m missing out on doing the fair the Melbourne Fair I’ve been working six months on and invested a lot of money in Artwork for people to see so I’ve got some free tickets here so I can leave them in my letterbox on the way to Caulfield racecourse tomorrow you can come and collect some. And I’ve decided starting at 12 o’clock to 5 o’clock tomorrow we’re gonna have a sale as I don’t really want to bring all the Paintings back even though it took so long to research people overseas etc. It was supposed to say I reckon I had the best style but please go tomorrow and please follow me and please share this link so people can hear about it. Love to everyone. Please work hard for me as I must admit I’m laying here and I couldn’t even go to my own show because I didn’t have the support to get me in my Wheelchair and take me again so just another thing I’ve missed out on so friendships text messages mean the world to me sending love . #Goddaughter #God #Daughter #TheMelbourneFair #Paintings..

Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed the videos of my two stalls at the Melbourne Fair stall 16 and 17 . As you saw in the videos, unfortunately I won’t be able to make it to any of the days due to not getting the Suport. I need to get up and hop in the car and go. So that’s disappointing to be laying in bed but not really physically feeling that sick but mentally feeling sick thinking that I can’t be at something I’ve worked six months for. It just proves you never know what tomorrow brings positives and negatives. That’s why we keep going. Keep the positivity happening and my staff are absolutely doing a brilliant job of that trying to make me feel a part of the show. I love my three staff so much David Turner, Paula Sutton and our new girl Ivy. Which I still haven’t had the pleasure to even meet. Please, please go to the fair this Saturday and Sunday I can leave tickets in the letterbox for you sending love #TheMelbourneAntiqueFair #Melbourne #MelbourneGallery #Artwork #Paintings

Hey guys, I hope that little video clip gives you a bit of an insight on what I’ve been up to for the last six months. Working getting ready to do the Melbourne Fair. It’s been many hours of work and also financially difficult. I’ve invested everything into this show. I’m representing these eight artists. I really believe in and they’ve proven to me the world class artists and I still can’t believe I’ve got such a great team of Artist and my one big family and we all look after each other and help each other and that’s what it’s all about. So the opening night is just finished we had some good little sales and quite a few people interested in Paintings that will come back over the weekend. I’ve still got plenty of free tickets so please text me or send me a message. I can even just leave them in my letterbox so on the way to the Caulfield race course. I’ve got enough tickets that you could get a big group of people and really make a day of it. If anyone can’t make the fair over the next three days the show will be coming back to my Gallery and will be shown for quite awhile as it’s 450 Paintings to look at. So obviously I don’t need to buy any more Art. Or my manager will absolutely kill me LOL. It could be doing worse things. So anyway I’m not whingeing about it but yes stuck in bed for the last couple of months. Something to do with health. Some to do with agencies organising shifts for me to get out of bed but I’m still glad I’m a part of the world through social media. But this is what you do when you’re stuck on your back? You’re in hospital low TV and it just gives you plenty of time to think so I knew exactly where every Painting I wanted to be hung love to where everyone please make an effort to get to the racecourse. If not tell a friend and they can come and get tickets as well. #TheMelbourneFair #MelbourneGallery #TheMelbourneArtFair #TheMelbourneAntiqueFair #Paintings

Hey guys, as you just saw in my video, I wasn’t able to make it to the VIP night. But I really gotta thank my staff Pauline, David Turner and Ivy. I could ask for three hard-working people would you believe David hung that show all by himself in two days and Paula did so much labelling social media you name it we went all out. There was 600 people that came to the VIP night as I said we made some nice little sales made some nice contacts and now it’s time for all you guys to come down and enjoy a free day. If you’d like to get a group of people together, I’m happy to give you tickets for enough for everybody children welcome. If there’s anything I can help you with please ask as I’ll be in bed over the weekend waiting to hear from you guys and please take lots of photos and videos so I can still fill apart of the fair. I also want to thank the Melbourne Fair on all their hard work they’ve done to help me realising my situation. I’ve had to put this whole show together pretty much from Bed in hospital and at home. Hours of just lying on my back in a room by myself working out which Painting is going with Richard Artist thank God I’ve got my Gallery to keep me going. I’d be really lost without it. So get to the show purchase something is there something there for everybody to keep my Gallery running sending love to everybody. #MelbourneFair #MelbourneAntiqueFair# #Paintings #Art.

Hey guys, as I said I’ve just got out of hospital. I think it’s been five times. I’ve got a hospital in the last eight months. It’s getting harder and harder with less nurses working etc and as a Quadriplegic obviously with no movement you just left stuck on your back. It could be for hours just staring at the ceiling last year. They took all the TVs out of the Austin Hospital. Can you believe it? So I spend time at three north at the Austin which is the spinal unit and that’s what they do to us. Just leave us on our back. Doesn’t matter that we’ve got no one to talk to or nothing to watch or I can’t even use my phone. Absolutely nothing. The reason I’m just telling you that just to respect what you guys have got when it comes to freedom I’ve been able to just jump out of bed and go on with your normal day. The unreason I’m telling you this is that I’m doing the Melbourne Fair as you probably know and the VIP night is next Thursday the 30th at 6 o’clock now if you can prove to me that you start following me or you’ve helped somebody to follow me. Send me a address urgently or you can come and pick it up and I’ll give you free tickets for the VIP night and also free tickets for the Friday Saturday and Sunday representing about eight different artists. I’ve hired two stalls. Pretty sure they’re number 15 and number 16 as I want to have the best all there so if I didn’t have my job and my Art to think about when I’m stuck in these moments at night even at home in my bedroom and if the carers can’t hear me buzzing with my pages, I’m just left there until somebody comes in so that’s why I sleep with my phone on my chest but also very scary if the Internet goes out, but anyway, let’s get back to the positive side of things. Please guys go to this Melbourne Fair. I absolutely beg you absolutely I’ll do anything for you guys to share what I’ve been working on for the last six months. I will also have my Home Gallery open full-time on those days as well so you got the opportunity to go to the fair but also come to the Gallery here for some great sales as always sending all my love. Please share this one as it is important
