April 14, 2025 Poem-a-Day
“alameda point” by @david.maduli
selected by @willieperdomo

I’m thrilled to be included in The Academy of American Poets for today’s #poemaday Gratitude to el profe Willie Perdomo, curator for April, dear mentor, and one of the best to ever do it. This poem includes my children and the landscapes of the Bay, and pays homage to the 🐐 American poet #lucilleclifton. I was honored to share an early version a couple years back as part of an interdisciplinary performance with the incredible @_rawdance dancers for Step/Song/Story.

Free writing workshop this Saturday, October 3 at 3pm @sfpubliclibrary Park Branch. The topic is Ekphrastic Poetry: poems in response to or inspired by another work of art. I’ve been teaching #ekphrasticpoetry for several years in the @lindenwooduniversity @lindenwood_cah MFA in Writing program, and Redwood Coast Record Crate, the b-side to my book includes 16 ekphrastic poems that spring from 16 record covers from my collection. I’m excited to share some learnings and thoughts on process and spark some writing! In conjunction with #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth we’ll be grounding in ekphrastic works by Luisa Igloria @poetslizard , @aimee_nezhukumatathil, @patrickrosal and more, and taking inspiration from the art in and around the library for some writing prompts and exercises. 1833 Page St in Upper Haight come thru! by @david.maduli

Last month was the first #HouseOfFeelz where Jason Bayani and myself rocked slow jamz and smooth grooves on the decks and read poems alongside some of our favorite poets at the mighty Nomadic Bookshop in Oakland. Stay tuned as we scheme on ways to continue to build this as a tradition. I had also made a cassette mixtape for the occasion with 80s slow jamz on the front and 90s on the back. Side A is up for your listening pleasure, enjoy - word to Bruce LeeRoy. #TheLastDragon #StrictlyBusiness davidmaduli.com/candyjamz or link in bio by @david.maduli

Found out today that the manuscript for my second book, which was announced as a finalist for a press reading series last month, was not selected. This is the third time the manuscript, a collection of poems, has been a finalist - while in the process it’s been rejected over 60 times since I completed it 3 years ago. The “close calls” always sting more than the generic rejections. Not even going to front that it makes me want to give up, because the truth is that I’ve given up many times over the past three decades or so of actively writing, engaging in literary communities, and striving to get the work out there.

Shout out to Sampaguita Press, who took a chance on my work and published my first book Alemany Bay Window/Redwood Coast Record Crate in 2024, and all my family and folx who have read, shared, cared about, and supported it. Much love to my mentors and co-conspirators who give the work attention and critical feedback. All the orgs, institutions and individuals that have provided resources to keep going. Shout out to my students who I am teaching poetry craft with right now, who are excited about the art form.

Poetry is at odds with the marketplace because it is not for that - it’s an ancient and ancestral art form that is deeply human, deeply flawed, deeply feeling. AI sucks at writing poetry because poetry comes from somewhere else - from spirit, reflection, observation, and tapping in to strangeness of the world - physical, metaphysical, interior. It is a gift that anyone with their antenna up can capture, anyone with a pen and pad can document.

There are way more drastic and vital things happening to give energy and attention to, to not give up on. I’ve been writing this piece “still life, with bodies” since last fall, and had the opportunity to read it a couple times in the process. I would cut it into pieces and leave them strewn there or available to take because poetry should be tangible, should be carried too. The poem is still in process because empire is still catching, collecting, exploiting, extracting bodies. Gratitude to all still witnessing, still speaking, still fighting, still connecting, still giving. Bless up. by @david.maduli

Poet/DJs, David Maduli and Jason Bayani are bringing good words and good music to Nomadic Bookshop on May 9th for House of Feelz. They’ll be taking to the turntables and the mics along with special guest poets Janice Lobo Sapigao, Kevin Dublin, and Aimee Suzara!

1st set starts at 1pm, the readings kicks off at 2pm, and the fellas will end the afternoon behind the decks with a closing set.

Welcome to the House of Feelz, where the writing hits hard and the music hits smooth.

Belatedly sharing from the 4/6 reading with my longtime poet/educator/dj friend @david.maduli at College of San Mateo. It’s always an honor to collaborate, and remember that we were both Uc Berkeley in the 90s, and took a class together taught by Saul Williams in 2002… Ever since then I knew his writing was brilliant! So glad that my Katipunan students get to study and know his creative process & stories. They were fascinated by his musical and historical & ancestral influences, expansive use of the page. by @david.maduli

2.14.2026 Made some audio valentines! I initially recorded a set spinning some of Maxwell’s exquisite catalog for our friends’ young son named Maxwell who has a boombox. Given the timing I thought it’d be fun to spread the love. Link in bio for streaming/downloads and limited cassettes.

Much love to self-love, much love to the SF teachers striking and all the families and staff holding it down, much love to everyone working to protect their communities from ICE, much love to you. 💓💓💓 by @david.maduli
