27th August 2006 and hard to believe it’s now a full twenty years since the preview of my inaugural solo exhibition. Part of me wonders if the current conditions would make room for anything similar - I’d like to think so in any case.

Made in a fit of institutional take-over and laboriously hand drawn (in reverse) onto 36 A1 etching plates ‘Your Answer is Mine’ was an outsize intaglio etching stitched together and pasted directly onto a full size billboard especially reconstructed in the gallery to be in direct conversation with a system it aimed to respond.

In a chaotic blend of image and text under the forced marriage between the churn of consumerism and mass media, a cascade of hallucinogenic self penned sentences blending theory and fiction filled the yawning space, each one rendered in a mock antique serif font ending in the withering suffix of ‘Now’.

Like a game of snakes and ladders, this was interspered with visual riffs on impermanence such as David Hammon’s ‘Snowball Sale’, Valie Export’s Cigarettes and Joseph Beuys ‘Dead hare’, situated alongside randomly appearing pie charts equating corporate sponsorship with biennales and curators as brands burning oxygen and the silent BOOM of a living system sanctioned by market led enterprise stuck on repeat. This was expressed through a focus on the properties of paper as decaying matter, realised in the trompe l’oeil effect of multiple edges and torn surfaces denoting a collage worked by hand with an etching needle into a series of wax covered plates inked up and printed in the art school workshop at Manchester in what felt like a six month penance.

All made possible by @robinklassnik and the team @mattsgallerylondon and also @mariafusco for the insightful text on what I do, and the sorely missed Phil Baines who got it all by echoing everything through the gallery publication where some copies are I think still available. The whole thing was supported with some basic financial assistance from @Artscouncilengland. Good times. taken in Matt's Gallery by @david.studio.o

“ … the unbinding and interrogation of the grammatical games by which value, taste and ethics are constructed in cultural discourse; the deeper political and economic backdrops to such dynamics; and, perhaps most importantly, an ongoing and productive splicing of media, producing moments of transcendent humour, surprise and provocation.”

Special appreciation reserved for poet/writer @oopressgregthomas for his joining of the dots and insight on yours truly now published for the always reliable @burlingtoncontemporary

The full article can be found on the BC website (link in bio)

“If mordant satire has been a constant in Osbaldeston’s oeuvre, so too has a desire to find the gaps and fissures between recognised modes of creativity.”

Pilgrimage to the site of what was Cons Cottage, Rosroe. Co Galway. What is now an abandoned hostel amidst the detritus of industrialised salmon farm wreckage.

Details of my Abbey Fellowship Award at The British School at Rome from Jan - March 2026 are now online at the Abbey Awards website. So it goes…
British artist David Osbaldeston’s work moves fluidly between drawing, print, painting and collage to explore power relations between the personal and systemic.

Extract from David’s ‘Meet the artists’ BSR blog ….further info see link in bio

“What became evident was a need in the studio to position each pair of paintings with photo documentation as posters in a bid to close the gap between the work and its wider context”

The artist would like to express warmest thanks to The Abbey Council and all at The British School at Rome for the facilitation and support in the realisation of new work.

Thanks to Greg Thomas @oopressgregthomas for the insights on my recent book ‘A Pastiche of Different Techniques’ which gets some airtime in the round up in the current issue of Art Monthly @art_monthly_uk Especially heartening in a way that gets the irreverent twists and turns between power and materiality. The title evolved out of 2 exhibitions of the same name held @moon_grove_ & @glasgowprintstudio made to a hundred numbered copies, published by @slimvolume available via publisher, as well as @mattsgallerylondon & @glasgowprintstudio by @david.studio.o
