Hope you enjoyed the summer months. As we search for our new home, and gear up for the new season, we wanted to reminisce on the first Toronto Youth Spoken Word Festival in July.

So proud of our poets, organizing team and all of the community partners that made it happen. See you all again soon.

⚪️🔴⚪️ RIP Yayoi Kusuma 🔴⚪️🔴

Discovering your work was a memorable experience years ago in Japan. And then having your exhibition come to Toronto at the AGO, getting immersed into your world was fascinating.

Learning your long art journey and history, time in nyc, and who you influenced (and influenced you) helped me as an artist. And your talents in painting, photography, installations and of course the famous repetitive polka dot is truly incredible.

A one of a kind artist.

And losing Dolly Parton as well. Some legends departing us this month 😢 by @davidakiogrant

🇨🇴 Colombia 🙏💔

So sad seeing the destruction in Colombia from the recent earthquake. Just months after Venezuela had an even more devastating one.

Praying for all those suffering right now 🫶 taken in Colombia by @davidakiogrant

When @patrick_debelen and @shoolie_ reached out to me and asked if I could photograph @torontoyouthpoetryslam’s events (thanks to @staygoldenoutreach), I couldn’t say no to working with these two great people.

What I didn’t know was that I was walking into an incredible community of passionate, talented and great people and poets.

Photographing their monthly event, I was able to witness the power of poetry, hear deep feelings and see poets grow into their words and poems over the last 8 months.

Tonight is the FINAL, featuring 12 of the city’s strongest youth poets. Come through to @itsok.world tonight, doors open at 6pm (can buy tickets at the door).

You will not regret it, but you may cry, laugh, think and smile leaving full of awe and inspiration. by @davidakiogrant

Last year, I had the honour and privilege to spend a few weeks in Palau to paddle and learn from the great Sesario Sewralur. I was granted this opportunity thanks to @mauianela who worked tirelessly to organize and to extend her connections to allow me to join.

I learned on Friday, the difficult news that Sesario passed away, far too early for anybody that knew him.

Sesario was a unique and incredible human. A man of so much knowledge, wisdom and kindness. A true teacher of navigation, but also of life. He was a master navigator and one of the few people who could still sail and navigate using the stars, swells and nature. Indigenous knowledge and an art form that is sadly disappearing as the world modernizes and even remote corners of our planet get affected by technology.

I haven’t posted much of my Palau trip, as I planned on growing the body of work and to spend more time in the South Pacific learning, with the hope of even sailing amongst this great man and his crew. Earlier than usual typhoons this year cancelled the final leg of the Maisu’s journey last minute with the @micronesianvoyagingsociety, which is what I was going to join.

While I only recently met Sesario and for a short period, he welcomed me (and all of us visiting) as part of his family. Always laughing and smiling his generosity was so apparent to everybody he met.

Just a reminder that you can have an outsized impact on people in your life, irrespective of how long you meet. So cherish the relationships and friendships you do have and embrace the ones you will make in the future.

Rest easy Captain, I know you’re looking down on all of us and helping us navigate these difficult times, and watching over us in the future.

Love and prayers to his family, friends and crewmates 🙏❣️ taken in Palau by @davidakiogrant

⚽️⚽️WORLD CUP!!⚽️⚽️

The wait is over 🎉 and the beautiful game has arrived. And now it’s Canada’s turn to host.

Yes the lead up has been controversial (don’t get me started on their pricing..) and Infantino is a thug who runs FIFA like the mafia.

But he knew we’d all watch, and the excitement is real as Canada kicks off today against Bosnia 🙌

Who are you rooting for?!

I got Canada 🇨🇦, Japan 🇯🇵, and Brasil 🇧🇷 (sempre saudades) as my top 3.

Let’s gooooo!!
