A Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit assembles an intergenerational group of artists who explore how magic, esoteric knowledge, and spirituality have shaped queer art and culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The exhibition traces intersections between magical practice and major social and political movements, such as gay liberation and feminism.

Drawing on the meaning of arcana—hidden and mystical knowledge—the exhibition examines how LGBTQ+ artists have turned to the magical and the spiritual as tools for self-expression, connection, and transformation. The traditions represented are wide-ranging, including Western occultism, witchcraft and goddess worship, Christian mysticism, New Age beliefs influenced by Eastern philosophies, and beliefs rooted in Indigenous knowledge. The secret doctrines and expansive visions of these traditions have afforded artists ways to imagine life beyond repressive systems, reclaim sexuality as sacred power, and build community.

A Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit is made possible through generous support provided by donors to Q+ Art at Palm Springs Art Museum.

Additional support is provided by the Trellis Art Fund (@trellisartfund) and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts (@warholfoundation). taken in Palm Springs Art Museum by @davidevansfrantz

On March 22nd, Q+ Art at @psartmuseum will present talks with legends 𝐑𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 and 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐚, this year’s Q+ Art Keynote Awardee 🏆, in celebration of the often-overlooked legacy of LGBTQ art and activism in Southern California. @ronatheyartist will be joined by @alexfialho_ for a discussion on the intersections of queer nightlife, performance, and AIDS activism in LA. @judy_baca will share about her art, activism, and organizing, including her landmark mural “The Great Wall of Los Angeles,” which includes one of the earliest public monuments to gay rights in the United States. 🏳️‍🌈

Last year, I took the position of curator-at-large at PSAM where I oversee the museum’s new Q+ Art initiative to support LGBTQ art history. I’m excited to work on great programs like this one, as well as future shows and building the museum’s collection of queer artists.

Not to be miss duo! ⚡️🔥💐 Expect lots of great stories. Lemme know if anyone needs comp tickets.

Run down for the event:
