Eric-Paul Riege’s work chestplate [3] (2026) is included in 𝘈 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢: 𝘈𝘳𝘵, 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 at the Palm Springs Art Museum, through October 18, 2026.

𝘈 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢 brings together an intergenerational group of artists who explore how magic, spirituality, and esoteric knowledge have shaped queer art and culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Drawing on the meaning of arcana – hidden and mystical knowledge – the exhibition considers how queer artists have turned to a wide range of spiritual traditions and practices as sources of connection and transformation. These artists engage magic as a way to envision worlds beyond repressive systems, reclaim sexuality as a sacred power, and build community.

Through “Sashay Away,” Chris E. Vargas examines the politics of visibility in this mesmerizing video that remixes scenes from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” questioning what is gained and what is lost when queer cultural production moves from subculture to mainstream entertainment.

After viewing this riveting video, come grab a copy of “Trans Hirstory in 99 Objects,” edited by David Evans Frantz, Christina Linden, and Chris E. Vargas, and see one of 99 objects that help tell the story of four centuries of trans and gender-nonconforming history. Your book purchase supports 516 ARTS, Bookworks, artists, and authors!

Come see Chris E. Vargas’s work in “The Rest is Drag,” on view at 516 ARTS through October 11th, 2026.

We're always thrilled to be back at @elmuseo! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ on view until January 2027, "Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art," is a major exhibition celebrating the life and work of Sandoval, an artist whose practice explored gender, sexuality, identity, and belonging through humor and political urgency. Curated by the brilliant C. Ondine Chavoya and David Evans Frantz, the exhibition explores Sandoval’s visionary Butch Gardens School of Art, a conceptual framework for collaboration, experimentation, and creative community that challenged traditional art world structures.

2 exciting openings @elmuseo!

“Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art” examines life and work of Teddy Sandoval (1949-1995), artist rooted in LA’s queer and Chicane communities who explored gender, sexuality, identity, and belonging with humor and political urgency. Curators @ondinechavoya & @davidevansfrantz (1) put his work in dialogue with contemporary artists including Cielo Félix Hernandez (2) & @luiscarlenyc (3)

“Octopus & Others: Acts of Collaboration & Poetics” was inspired by Papo Colo’s accordion-style outdoor book first staged in El Museo’s courtyard in 1982. Curator @zuna.g.m.m united a cross-generational group including @mev_merized (4), @homeboybeautiful (5) @nitzatufino (6) @jesuspapoleto & @rodzcalero (7). 8-9 Papo Colo invited artists & poets from the NY scene to contribute panels to Octopus

I’m deeply grateful to Miles W. Griffis @confettiwesterns for this generous, thoughtful reflection on Give Us Home Spider: Ritual 5: TXI Cement Quarry, Bloomington, CA currently on view at the @psartmuseum in the September issue of @highcountrynews

Thank you for recognizing how this work brings ritual, queer cosmology, environmental racism, and collective healing into conversation, and for holding its ongoing urgency with such care. I’m especially moved by your words connecting the work to the need to “acknowledge the harms done to us and the Earth” and how this is an ONGOING situation, and the importance of finding and forging meaningful ways to fight injustice.

It is an honor to be included alongside so many powerful LGBTQ+ artists in Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit at Palm Springs Art Museum curated by @davidevansfrantz
Thank you, Miles. 🌌🕷️

Keep reading for more words from Miles:

#repost @confettiwesterns 🌌 My latest #ConfettiWesterns column explores a trend of queer art exhibits, like Palm Springs Art Museum’s “Queer Arcana”, that center magic and alternative spiritualities in the Southwest.

The artwork invites us to hex city councils approving data centers and pour circles of salt around ourselves to protect our souls from the malevolence of AI-generated slop. They invite us to form our own cosmologies as well as coalitions with our nonhuman neighbors.

I was particularly struck by the work of @edgarfabianfrias who performed a series of rituals in Southern California to address environmental racism and health disparities in “Give Us A Home Spider”, especially as smoke from the Lineage Fire darkened our skies earlier this summer.

Queer Witches in @artforum! 🔥

Grateful to @foxandhisfriends for including me and my artwork Give US Home Spider (Ritual 5: TXI Cement Quarry), 2017 in this beautiful review of A Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit at @psartmuseum and curated by @davidevansfrantz. Especially for putting my artwork in conversation with Sergio Hernández Francés, whose work I’ve long admired.

Sharing a short clip here of my artwork featuring the “electronic pop” mentioned by @foxandhisfriends and, as you’ll see, a curious family who happened upon our performance! 🤣 Artists seen in this clip are: @a_v_willcutt @yoli_alma_flor @sergiojuliotorres @demifromtheblock @yunuen_rhi @kwonyin @eternalpearlrecords 🩵

There are soooo many incredible magical stunning artists and artworks included in this exhibition and I cannot urge you strongly enough to make it out to the desert to see this exhibition before it closes on October 18!

I got so emotional the first time I walked through the exhibition and felt the impact of being included in such a thoughtfully curated collection of history and art. It truly feels like a huge moment in my life and career as an art witch 😭😭🙏✨
