Working with Music Education majors and graduate students is as much rewarding as it is inspiring. I’m grateful my colleague Jose Luis Diaz Jr. for continuing to bring his students to @metmuseum in an effort to gain experience and deeper insight into museum gallery teaching and inquiry based learning here @metmusicalinstruments Happy to serve all music students, educators, faculty and musicians as a resource and a platform for the work they do in their classrooms and their communities. @huntercollege @hunterschoolofed taken in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York by @davidkfreeman

A tiny sonic glimpse of the METEORA Theremin, tested here with standard repertoire just a few hours after my first encounter with this beautiful new instrument at @metmuseum in New York.
The METEORA Theremin was commissioned by the MET’s @metmusicalinstruments galleries in collaboration with @davidkfreeman Associate Educator at the MET.
Having collaborated with @cyrillance84 on multiple @moogsynthesizers theremins in the past, I reached out to him to envision a new instrument: a contemporary theremin that honors the pioneering legacies of Lev Termen and Robert Moog.
Cyril brought METEORA to life, combining a modified Moog Etherwave circuit, a custom tube amplifier by @carramps & a handcrafted mahogany cabinet by @hayesfinefurniture Fine Furniture.
Playing METEORA reminds me how profoundly an instrument shapes a musician’s possibilities. I am so excited to explore its unique voice through new compositions!
My heartfelt thanks to Cyril and everyone on the team who helped bring METEORA to life, and to David Freeman and the entire MET team @jaysonkerrdobney @gloriayunwonlee @alexacummins @max.hollein for making this collaboration possible and welcoming the instrument into its new home. METEORA will now be used for music education at the MET!
✨ Coming up: November 14th! Join me for the next theremin workshop at the MET, in collaboration with the @nythereminsociety , featuring METEORA. by @davidkfreeman

Celebrating Hispanic / Latine Heritage at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Artist on Artworks provides visitors with opportunities to take a closer look at the permanent collection, creating new connections and understanding around the creative process.

After a multi-year renovation, The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, reopened in May 2025. This reimagined space is home to three of the museum’s major collections and spans 5 continents and hundreds of cultures.

Koyo, Koyoltzintli sonic legacies investigate the Americas as a means to repair, reclaim, and reimagine temporalities of healing, while telling stories across time and space. Through research and contemplation on pre-American instruments, Koyo’s practice explores the intersection between sculpture, performance, and ritual that begins with the reconstruction of ancient sound artifacts referenced and inspired by the Museum’s @metmusicalinstruments collection.

This session offers a sonic offering as a site-specific experience incorporating Andean cosmology and iconographies from the dream world of her ancestors in the Pacific Tropical Coast followed by conversation with Museum visitors.

Special thanks to our curatorial, gallery, VX and Security teams. Congratulations to @dj_francesca_ @davidkfreeman and @mango_lyfe for providing another engaging and inspiring experience for our visitors. Theremin State of Mind. The Metropolitan Museum of Art Celebrated Musical Bodies with two days of programming featuring theremin virtuoso, Dorit Chrysler and acclaimed electronic instrument designer, Cyril Lance which included performance, panels and workshops. We also welcomed Cyril’s unique theremin protype to the Museum, The Meteora, in support of music education programming that highlights the historical legacy of Lev Theremin and Bob Moog and the contributions their instruments have made to the arts and sciences. A heartfelt thank you to Dorti, Cyril, Carr Amplifiers and Hayes Fine Furniture for working with us to build this one of a kind instrument. Thanks to the NY Theremin Society for the workshop support. And special thanks to @alexacummins and our Museum colleagues in Education, Visitor Services, Security, Venue Ops and Custodial Departments for their continuous support for Music Education programming here at The Met. 📸 #Meteora @argenisphoto

On September 20, 2026, the Musical Bodies Creative Convening welcomed over 1,000 audience members to the Museum in celebration of this special exhibition with multidisciplinary artists, musicians, and experts who contributed to the show. This convening examined how musical instruments, in turn, often draw their form and decoration from our bodies, emerging as powerful vehicles that represent our voices, actions, and identity. From clapping hands and tapping feet to beatboxing and whistling, the human body is a musical instrument.

Thanks and congratulations to Bradley Strauchen-Scherer, Ava Valentina and the Musical Instruments Department, Franesca D’Alessio, Gabriel Mungo, Marianna Siciliano, Fernanda Pena, AVMS and the Museum Security and Custodial Teams.

Special thanks to our participating guest speakers and artists.

Anthony Ross Costanzo, Bryan Wagorn, emily Eagen, Tamir Hargana, Dr. Anthony F. Jhan, Dr. Youngnan Cho, Audry Wright, Stephanie Ann Boyd, Geoff Robertson, Shanon and Jade Gustafson (Anishnawbe)& Beatbox House

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Musical Bodies. The exhibition is made possible by Barbara Tober, the Diane W. and James E. Burke Fund, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, and the Gail and Parker Gilbert Fund.

Additional support is provided by Anonymous, The Dancing Tides Foundation, the Vanguard Council, and The Augustine Foundation in memory of Rose Augustine.
