Puerto Escondido last summer for the new @travelandleisure May issue. When I arrived, a rare hurricane had just passed through the beach town. Damage was minimal, but a breakwater by the main port had been blown apart, so bigger waves than ever were crashing in from the Pacific, making the surfing especially epic.

It was a sign that on the coast of Oaxaca, even as the tourists pour in, nature is still in charge. The best places I visited for the May issue understood that well: @lavalisemazunte built their suites into a cliff and let the jungle poke through their terrace floors, shadows play across exhibits in @meridiano.art’s open-air gallery. “Beautiful Day” in the Sydney promos got my patriotic juices flowing. After Athens, I became a swimmer like my hero Michael Phelps. The epic drum show in the Beijing opener sparked an awe for cultures I knew little about.

The Olympics are one of my favorite things we do in this world and for me, they’ve been formative. It was a total dream assignment to report last year from Italy for the @olympics ahead of the Winter Games starting in Milan and Cortina this week! taken in Alta Badia, Dolomiti by @davidsho

Not a soup, actually a corn bread, sopa Paraguaya, as the story goes, was first made by mistake, the product of too much cornmeal added into a broth a 19th century chef had prepared for the president. Fearful of the leader’s notorious temper, the chef declared his mix-up a novelty and the recipe stuck.

Now a national dish and a staple at barbecues, we tried our hand at making it on a visit this May. At the market, vendors dispensed with our fussy online instructions and handed us these, from the Molina Santa Teresa. The result: cheesy, dense, stick to your ribs. taken in Asunción, Paraguay by @davidsho
