Honoured to have been invited to the mayor of Amsterdam’s residence to deliver a speech about the power and urgency of the dancefloor 🥹

It was for the launch of Amsterdam’s first institute for night culture: INC will be a new club underground and above ground in the city centre. A meeting place where all of the city’s electronic music history will be archived but also where young and older generations will work together in preserving and building the future of nightlife.

Not adding my full 6,5 minute speech: but some snippets!

This pride I’m looking back at unposted pictures I made in 2023: when I went to Tbilisi to write a long piece about 30 years of club culture in Georgia, how nightclubs are on the frontline of activism in a country that’s unwillingly moving towards Russia and how young and queer people are coping with that.

1 Nia, in her bar, called Success bar: the oldest and only gay bar in Tbilisi
2 Naja and Giorgi, who run the legendary club @basssiani , a nightclub in a swimming pool under a football stadium. Where above ground there’s conservative chants, while downstairs men hold each others hands wearing skirts. I gifted them these scarfs.
4 Khmauri, the Georgian word for ‘noise’ I got tattooed on my back: in a time where our rights are under pressure. We gotta make noise, through our voices and music.
5 Club Left Bank

9 a dinner between a former rave journalist, club owner, programmer, dj, and a gay bar owner
And some other pictures that speak for itself.

I often look back at these memories with such fondness: the people I met, the inspiration I felt and most of all the confirmation it gave me, travelling to different places, immersing myself and telling important stories is what gives me most energy in life. I miss it and hope to do it again one day ❤️

🪭 Carnival in Rio Sunday recap: everyone’s got their clothes off, unmatched energy everywhere, everyone’s snogging each other, looking into a Brazilian guy’s eyes more than 2 seconds results in kissing and the entire street cheering you on, my nipple was bleeding because my piercing ripped through cuz crowds were pushing in the tunnels, was not scared at all!! 🤡 Apparently went into the favela’s for a street party and ended the day with a screaming-pop party with a bunch of gays in the hills overlooking Rio. The best part about it is the lovely people taking me everywhere. So grateful!! ♥️ So yeah kind of coming back next year 🥹 taken in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil by @davidwouters

🌿🌆 Swipe & Story: The concrete jungle of São Paulo absolutely stole my heart

For quite some years I’ve tried to ground in Amsterdam: in the lovely friends around me, to centre in the privileges I have and in the excitement of my new job: and it’s doing that partially.

But quite often I struggle rooting in the city (And I guess it runs in my family, cause everyone’s left the Netherlands 😅). It’s a place like São Paulo where I feel it at its strongest: it reminds me what a place looks like that could potentially fit more with the ‘grown-up’ version of David.

That’s what’s always attracted me about bigger cities: they’re adult playgrounds full of adventures, opportunities, people to meet, places to get lost in and stories to tell.

Especially here. Being surrounded by towers as far as meets the eye, streets filled with tropical greens and trees, brutalism, raw energy, where people smile, eat together at food stalls, dance, laugh despite hardships, the chaos and little less control, the creativity and huge queer scene where people kiss and hold hands everywhere (!!!): it makes me feel so alive.

It’s nice to experience how I respond to a new environment and reflect on and dream about the feeling of who I am when I’m somewhere else. taken in São Paulo, Brazil by @davidwouters

Onlangs reisde ik naar 🇱🇹 Litouwen voor twee reportages. Een land waar kinderen drones leren bouwen, en waar tijdens mijn bezoek nog een grootschalige Russische/Belarussische militaire oefening plaatsvond aan de grenzen. En toch wonen daar de gelukkigste jongeren ter wereld.

🎥 My first time presenting, as I’m setting up video for newspaper de Volkskrant. I’ll be working with journalists to bring their stories to life on screen, and who knows I’ll pop in sometimes too :)

Excited for this huge opportunity. It’s been a long road, not coming from the traditional journalism background. Full transparency? A decade of mostly feeling lost career-wise, hearing ‘no’ more times than I can count. But every rejection fueled my fire 🔥 to work twice as hard. From starting my own magazine about politics and dance and travelling to Georgia, Ukraine and beyond, studying how to make explainers, reading books, running my geopolitics TikTok, freelance writing, juggling five jobs, and taking a risk on an internship.. it’s finally paid off. 🤠 by @davidwouters
