Wouldn’t have expected back in the day that turning 30 would feel this good.

Celebrated with birthday dinners with my mom and dad, followed by dirty flirty birthday drinks with my loveliest friends.

Feeling so blessed to be surrounded by such beautiful people and grateful for how life has been unfolding lately. If 21-year-old me could only see this now, she’d be so proud.

Drone lessons against fear of Russia

The Lithuanian government is opening special schools to train children to become drone pilots. This will prepare them for the growing threat from Russia. „We live close to a war zone.“

In a Lithuanian classroom on the Russian border, drones fly across computer screens. A little further away, Russian tanks are conducting exercises, while inside, students from the Aušra grammar school in Taurage are hunched over their screens. They are aged 10 to 14. Controllers firmly in their hands, they keep their eyes on the flight unfolding before them.

Fourteen-year-old Edgaras Maraulis has already mastered flying thanks to his experience with flight games. He races his drone across a virtual obstacle course at breakneck speed and says he’s worried. He saw a Russian drone invading Lithuania on the news in August. „With these lessons, I want to learn how to use drones to defend my country,“ says Edgaras.

The Lithuanian government opened the first of nine drone schools this month. Since September, students have been able to take drone lessons in Tauragė, a city 20 kilometers from the Russian border.

📢 We interviewed Steven Lummel van, artist and founder of cultural hotspot PIP in The Hague, which has many artistic branches such as two record labels, a book publishing agency, and an online TV channel, as well as Amsterdam-based freelance journalist and cultural manager David Wouters. They both explained to us the implications of this political change, along with the complex situation the country finds itself in, and the consequences this could have for independent cultural organisations.
