Hi! 👋🏽

There are some new faces around here, but it’s also been a while since I did any kind of intro post.

So here’s one with the least amount of effort required, mostly so I don’t overthink it.

My names is Davona, pronounced duh-voh-nah. I’ve been part of the writing/book community since 2018.

I queried a completely different version of my current WIP in 2020. Outgrew that draft and finished the rewrite in 2024. Started revising last year (yes, I’m still revising!). Am currently hoping to query in Spring 2027.

I am a book hoarder, and addict. I read widely but thriller, horror, and romance are my favorite, though I love dark fantasy.

I am neurospicy, I have sensory issues, I stim, I think out loud, and I hate the feeling of lotion on my hands (winter sucks).

I’m excited for all things pumpkin and autumnal. The vibes, the outfits, the snacks, the movies. All the way until November 1st when I become a Christmas freak. Sorry not sorry.

I’m so excited for what the rest of the year has in store!

Just…stop 😒

Yesterday’s news—that companies are DESTROYING ANTIQUE BOOKS to train 🅰️👁️—felt like a gut punch.

I needed to make my stance clear, here. See above ⬆️

Every new piece of information we get as this monster keeps getting fed, and fed, is exhausting and heartbreaking. And scary.

Destroying books, original copies, is devastating. It’s also calculated. There is NO GOOD REASON to destroy books, information, history.

To study literature is to examine the impact of society, culture, on the written word, and vice versa. Even fiction (especially fiction). Books are the records of human life.

They’re literally tearing apart the fabric of humanity, book by book.

What are we gonna do about it? What CAN we do about it?🥺

Feminine Rage in Horror 🤬🪓

I have NEVER been quiet in this space about being a survivor. Cases like Jane Doe and Kendall Francis are EXACTLY why. I will NOT be silenced by shame that doesn’t belong to me. And I hope I encourage others to find the strength to use their voice when they’re ready.

I am Jane Doe.

I was 19 when I was groomed and aşşaulted regularly, and I was 20 when I was r***d. That was 14 years ago.

And we’re still here….

Story was one of only ways for me to regulate my emotions afterward. It still is. I have a book in my heart about my experience that I hope to share one day.

Until then I will continue to advocate for and support survivors.

If you, like me, need a way to take a breath or two so you can keep fighting, or if you just really NEED to witness someone get their lick back (retribution), then here are some books, movies, and tv series you can check out.

We’re so back 😎👻🎃

Hello Spooky Szn, my old friend.

It was really difficult to switch from absolute, skin-boiling rage, to excitement for things that go bump in the night.

The switch back will be swift and severe, but as a survivor I needed to take a breath from fire breathing anger.

So we celebrate the ghouls and goblins 😈

Mind you, it’s scary times in my house all year long. But now, I’m gonna be obnoxious about it 😏

If you liked A Different World try some of these 🤎📚

From mystery to fantasy to horror, there’s something for everyone.

I particularly loved, Seton Girls By @charlenethomasbooks and Bound By Fury by @author_noellemonet which both cover some specifically poignant, and CURRENT, topics.

All of these books are full of important conversations and beautiful representations of black students and their experiences in academia.

I forgot this was the whole point ✍🏽📚

My relationship with writing has been almost nonexistent in the last few months. I was certain my desire to truly enjoy my summer was the main factor, but I’ve had ZERO motivation to work on my book.

Maybe it’s because I feel so far from the next goal post. Maybe it’s because generative A I is rapidly crushing my soul and sucking the creativity out of the ether. Maybe it’s because I REALLY HATE REVISIONS OMG

But I hadn’t felt any joy or excitement for my book for months. Until I let myself play, just a little.

I developed a new plot bunny. I figured a plot change for another. I let myself worldbuild and fantasize, and what happened?

I found my dream again 🥹

I remembered exactly what excited me about THIS book. My eerie summer thriller with a tons of drama and a twist I’m dying to get on paper!

So now I feel reinvigorated, renewed, ready to stop b.s-ing myself.

If I’m not back with an update in a week, please shame me 🙏🏾

I can’t even begin to process this one 💔

Dolly was such a LIGHT. She brought warmth and authenticity to everything she did and THAT’S why we’re feeling her loss so deeply.

Not just because of the beautiful music, the incredible acting, or her vast generosity. She was a giant among small minded people, and she still felt real.

What a soul. What an inspiration.

Dolly was always herself. Always. Even with whatever enhancements, all she ever did was emphasize who she really was.

Damn, Dolly. We’re gonna miss you so much 😞
