SAPPHIRE 2024: learning from the unexpected. You can go into a field season with big ideas and precise plans, but the ocean will always have the last word. The blue whales and krill may have been hard to find this year, but there's no place I'd rather be humbled by how much we have yet to understand, and no team I'd rather share a boat with, work with, laugh with, and learn with. Let's do it all again next (austral) summer.

Traveling across the Pacific for southern hemisphere summer fieldwork is just as exciting as it was 7 years ago, but these days leaving feels more bittersweet. T-3 days until I head to Aotearoa New Zealand for a dream project, years in the making. T-39 days until I'm back with these two in our Oregon Coast home. by @dawn.reneee
