This is a great class for learning to sail! Dinghy sailing is an active style of sailing and can be a contact sport with the water (aka wear a wetsuit🤣). Ask me if you have questions or want details.

That's a wrap for #SAPPHIRE 2026! We've spent the last three weeks studying blue whales, krill, and climate change in Aotearoa New Zealand. Teamwork makes the dream work! Massive thanks to everyone who makes this project possible, both on the water and shoreside. Get ready for more whale and krill content, and here's a sneak peek at some happy moments in the field from the people behind the science 😊🐋🦐💎

Man oh man am I just grateful for Grinner and its gang. Learning to sail these last two years has gotten me through a lot of some real stupid bullshit. I looked forward to racing Wednesday every week and it weirdly grounded me. Life’s fun when you’re learning (reading everything, watching everything, balls deep in sailing stuff), scared (to fall in), scared (to disappoint your crew), excited (when things click each week), excited (when I get asked to join extra days) - feeling anxiousness from your day disappear when you get to the boat, and just overall the people who want to teach, the community, and so on. So so grateful. Can’t wait til next seasons Wednesday races!!!

I try my best to capture pics when I can, but shout out to @sailing_surveyor for taking my phone to get me a shot - captured it perfectly! Thanks Grinner 🙏🏼⛵️

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises, oh my! We are still giddy over the amazing day we had on the water yesterday leading another STEM Cruise with @oregon_seagrant. GEMM Lab’s Dawn Barlow and Nicole Principe were joined by a wonderful group of students from the Chemawa Indian School to learn how to observe marine mammals. We were all treated to a sight of over 100 Risso’s dolphins mixed with Pacific white sided dolphins and northern right whale dolphins. We were also fortunate enough to find humpback whales and a playful group of Dall’s porpoises.

And not to mention, it was a beautiful warm and sunny October day on the Oregon coast! We are grateful to share these experiences with the next generation of marine scientists 🌊

All research and photos collected under permit.

The days are getting longer, gray whales are showing up in our local waters, and the forecast is looking good. That can all mean just one thing: the start of the field season! The GEMM Lab is dusting off our field gear and procedures, training one another on instrumentation, and even developing approaches to non-invasively sample whale spouts with Hatfield Marine Science Center's iLab. We can't wait for another great summer of data collection on whales off the Oregon coast!

speechless about finally seeing the pressed flowers from a wedding bouquet I made ! magic! I love all of the paths you can take with plants, but seeing something you grew preserved is unreal.

SAPPHIRE fieldwork is officially underway! We are studying the impacts of climate change on blue whales and krill in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our first two days of fieldwork have already featured five blue whales, including a mom & calf pair! We look forward to sharing more updates from the South Taranaki Bight.
