Dearest Unhinged Readers,

I bring something to you that is more serious in nature today, but I need to share this. Today’s post touches on personal experiences with abuse, healing, and speaking out. Please read at your own pace and take care of yourself. Yes, we joke that reading, be it fantasy, romance, smut….is an escape, BUT it also is healing. Over the past year and a half, I have read so many books. So many beautifully crafted stories of struggles, betrayals, love won and lost, and overcoming trauma. Through these characters, stories of resilience, love, and hope have woven themselves into my very soul.

This past month, I gained the courage to speak in front of my local senate about supporting a bill to help educate children on Sexual Abuse and how to report it. A bill that would have very likely saved me from a decade of abuse.

While it’s true that I have been in therapy a long time, working on the issues stemming from the abuse, and have gained numerous coping skills, I have started healing. I’ve realized that healing has also come from an unexpected place, the very stories I’ve read to escape from reality. I’ve rooted for characters as they have overcome their own trials, read stories of resilience, strength, and finding love. I’ve learned that I can do the hard things. I am worthy of love. I am not broken. And I will not be hurt like that ever again. Come hell or high water, I will not let another child suffer as I did.

So, my post above highlights some of my favorite characters and the lessons that they have shared with me. Never let anyone tell you reading is silly, or just smut, because sometimes those smutty romances are the most healing of all. Thank you to the authors for writing these stories. Stories saved me when I was a child, and have now saved me as an adult again.

April Showers have me reading spicy books for hours.

Dearest Unhinged Reader,
Here in the Midwest USA we have had a bit of rain and quite a few storms. The weather, per usual, has been like a yoyo bouncing between hot, cold, wet and dry - humid and well pleasant. So what’s a girl to do?

Cuddle up with some spicy reads and listen to the rain or avoid the mugginess. If you find yourself in a similar situation, wishing for different weather - here are my recommendations for you.

If you are missing the cold winter- pick up Meg Aliven’s latest book in her Mosnter Boyfriend series - Haunt. It’s Halloween town meets gilmore girls- and the two mains? One is a new ghost and the other is a perfect gentleman whose been a ghost for quite a while.

Wanting instead to enjoy the freshness of Spring?
Try Bonds and Blooms by Polly Maple a cute OV. Faye is just starting university where she is around alphas for the first time after a traumatic past. The pack that she finds needs her as much as she needs them.

Or we could go with the warmth of summer. Bonded by Lavender by Aura Frost. I won’t lie, this OV does start off with a bit of heartbreak for our girl Sage. But, just like summer you are soon warmed through with the absolute love and care her pack has for her. This is a perfect summer read.

And lastly for fall, for my spooky readers, I just devoured Tea and Alchemy by Sharon Lynn Fisher. This gothic tale is full of yearning and supernatural bite. I loved the nods to Dracula. I read this book in one sitting, quite to the anoyance of Mr.Spice.

Dearest Unhinged Reader,

Meg Alivien @authormegalivien has done it again. First, we had Jamie and Reagan, best friends to lovers. Then we had Jo and Aidan, “I dislike your face” to lovers, and now we have “Hey, I just died, and my spirit needed to be tethered to someplace, so we chose the ghost house in town that’s secluded and already has a shut-in ghost resident who hasn’t left the house in 60 years. Hope you dont mind” to lovers. Did I mention they were both ghosts? One has been dead for a very long time, and the other just died. This ghostly love story is in the top 5 reads of my books so far this year, and I cannot imagine that it will be shifting very much.

Per usual, the amount of heart and wit poured into this book sang to my soul. Meg weaves emotionally complex stories with characters that make me feel seen. Each set of couples had their struggles, be it anxiety or other mental health challenges. I think this kind of visibility is so important. It also helps that both Kennedy and Theo just wind their way around your heart. Though they fall in love over the course of several days, it just feels right. Nothing feels rushed.

Here are a few quotes that either had me kicking my feet squealing or snorting with laughter:

“And instead of pondering over it like a pretentious Victorian ghost, I will channel my human side and speak with her—like a man.” - Theo

“And I may have charmed the mop to scrub the floor while I dusted.” Now I’m laughing. “That’s some Disney Princess shit right there!” - Theo and Kennedy.

“I force a bright smile to match her newfound energy, but in my head all I can think is: she wants to paint the walls. She wants to stay.” - Theo.

“I feel like I was meant to wait one hundred and thirty years just to meet you” - Theo

What can I say? I am now a simp for two dead people. <3
