Meet Team Airflo: Dax Messett

Dax is a fly fishing guide and two handed casting instructor based in Southern Oregon where he focuses on chasing steelhead with clients. Learn more about Dax below.

What is the most memorable fish you have landed, and why?
My first BC steelhead. My first morning ever in BC, I woke up a brutally hungover in my tent on a gravel bar. My buddy was already in his waders and getting his Watermaster ready to row across the river. He told me to just go downriver and start fishing when I got my shit together. It was still super dark. After suiting up, it was still grey light at best, I staggered down started fishing some dickwater because I couldn’t really focus yet. I looked across the river and Dean was already releasing a fish. He started yelling at me to move further down river. A few minutes later he already had another fish on. Being able to see now, I thought I was fishing pretty good water, but he yelled to keep moving down. He finally yelled “stop!” After three casts or so I hooked an absolute biblical hen that cartwheeled all over the river, it was quite epic. Hundreds of BC fish later, I still remember that fish, and that morning the most clearly…even through my foggy hungover haze.
Favorite current Airflo Line: Rage Compact Float.

@namproducts tour stop alert! I’ll be at the fantastic @pugetsoundflyshop at 10am on January 24th. After a visit and checking out products, we will head to the water to try out a quiver of rods, shooting line, and mono. Winter steelhead season is here, so get ready. We will also have some of our single hand rod line up as well that includes some really special saltwater and lake/sound sticks.

Salar Incomparabile 3 5/8″ with a Clear Silver anodised finish. Looking good, don’t you think?

The updated Standard Arbor version features revised spool porting for improved ventilation and weighs approximately 10 grams less than the original model.

Yesterday Jon and I had the pleasure of hosting last year’s Rogue Spey Clave Grand Prize raffle winners @shajuniper and @tjorton

There couldn’t have been more deserving winners of this trip, as Sha and TJ happen to be two longtime local anglers who have been supporting the Southern Oregon fly fishing community for many years, and the Rogue is their beloved home water.

Thanks to everyone who supports the Clave — this is what it’s all about. See you July 31 2027 at Griffin Park.

Post updated to remove incorrect AI label

Since they first opened their doors to keen steelhead anglers in 2015, I have spent several weeks a year with my guests at @skeenaspeyfishing, which is right on the banks of one of my favorite rivers on the planet. To say that it feels like home when we are there is an understatement. I gravitate my hosted trips to family run operations where my guests can really feel like they are part of a family while they are there. Thanks to the all star crew there who always exceed our expectations both on and off the water.

First visit to the Klamath River in NorCal and what a pleasure it was.

Hosted by the two and only @galgonefishing and @daxmessett and their crew in the land of giants to seek wild steelhead with a mix of half pounders and migratory fish.

Now liberated of 4 dams, the evidence of recovery is already in plain sight. This is a healthy watershed with a ton of life that hopefully only gets better over time.

Spey curious anglers would have a blast and those training for Spey-O-Rama would enjoy ample opportunity to extend long casts as well.

This is just a peak, more to come including dates for next year…

Spey Moses and the rest of the team from the @roguespeyclave would like to thank everyone for coming out last weekend and making it such a biblical event for our fly fishing and conservation communities.

We look forward to seeing you again July 31st, 2027. We will have another all star line up of guest speakers, the top brands, conservation organizations and fly shops on hand. Dec Hogan will be doing two classes, one on July 30 and the other on August 1st. The 3rd annual Mega Raffle will also take place, so let it be written..so let it be done.
