Silver Screen by Tama Hochbaum

Using her iPhone, Tama Hochbaum grabs TV screenshots of classic movies favored by her mother, who died in February of 2012. Silver Screen traces her mother’s legacy in a blend of visual technologies: celluloid transmitted via broadcast and rendered digitally, the TV screen, and the ubiquitous iPhone.

Tama Hochbaum is an artist/photographer living in Chapel Hill. Originally from New York, she received her BA from Brandeis University in Fine Arts and was awarded upon graduation a Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship to study printmaking at Atelier 17 in Paris. She received her MFA in Painting from Queens College in NYC. She worked as a painter for 20 years before turning to photography.

Quiet Eccentricities: The Vernacular Seen by Lewis Koch

A reconsideration of Lewis Koch’s seminal photographic work on vernacular architecture, Quiet Eccentricities: The Vernacular Seen presents mostly unpublished work made for a National Endowment for the Arts Photography Survey project which took place in southern Wisconsin, in the early 1980s. In addition to a key selection of the original images, an essay by curator and art historian Lisa Stone examines Koch’s photographs of commonplace structures in relation to his early work which preceded the NEA project, and the later work which it in turn inspired.

Drawing upon aspects of photography, sculpture, assemblage and text, Lewis Koch calls attention to the often unremarked upon elements of everyday life. Over the past fifty years, he has presented installations in garages, on kiosks and billboards, as well as in museums and galleries, in solo exhibitions internationally.  His work is held in permanent collections which include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, National Gallery of Art, and many more.

Either Limits Or Contradictions by Nick Meyer

A photo book about the pace of life, death, and the passage of time. Told in three chapters, Either Limits or Contradictions captures feelings of self-discovery, enjoyment, and death. Nick Meyer takes the viewer on the ebb and flow that makes up life. His visual narratives examine and confront the anxiety and eventuality that, because we all were born, time will pass, and so will we. As if the camera is an extension of his hand, Meyer’s images are candid, honest, and universal.

Nick Meyer received his BFA from MassArt in 2005 and his MFA from California College of the Arts in 2008. He is the recipient of the Pace Gallery Award and the Barclay Simpson Prize. He is represented by Uprise Art in New York.

The 49 States by Matthew López-Jensen

“The second I saw Google Street View in early 2008, I sensed [it was going to impact] the future of experiencing landscape and that it was going to shift everything. I wanted to make a piece of work with this right away. I wanted to do something conceptual with it, not to use it as a camera, but to talk about it as something that was going to shift the way we look at landscape. That’s what got me interested. I also thought it was beautiful—the strange awful cyan colors of the sky…

In general, real politics is in the way we experience land. As more people migrate away from taking road trips and as we experience the world through the Internet more and more, there’ll be fewer people invested in protecting the land, so it’ll be easier for major companies to come in and mess things up. What I imagine I would see in the future is the environmental movement shrinking because fewer people are exploring by car or on foot. So all these iconic things about the American landscape, things that many people become interested in through traditional family travel, it’ll be harder to protect them from future developments or assault.“ —Matthew López-Jensen

Matthew López-Jensen is a Bronx-based interdisciplinary artist whose rigorous explorations of landscape combine walking, photography, mapping, and social practice. His projects investigate the relationships between people and local landscapes. López-Jensen teaches environmental art and photography at Parsons School of Design at The New School and at Fordham University. He is a Guggenheim Fellow in photography and his work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art and the Brooklyn Museum, among other institutions. He received his MFA from the University of Connecticut and BA from Rice University.

The Impact Project: Persistence of Memory by Stan Gaz

Traveling through remote deserts and Arctic tundra, Stan Gaz photographs meteorite impact sites as records of destruction, creation, and enduring memory. Inspired by childhood expeditions with his geologist father and the stories communities attach to these places, Gaz connects personal history with the marks left on the earth. His photographs explore the quiet aftermath of extraordinary violence, reflecting on mortality and our place in the universe.

Stan Gaz’s work explores loss, memory, and transformation through the shifting relationship between hunter and hunted, examining how each shapes the other.

Diana Cheren Nygren: 2026 Daylight Photo Awards Juror Highlight

“Diana Cheren Nygren’s photographs serve as family portraits that transcend time and space. They revive the histories her ancestors left behind to survive, as well as the past they attempted to erase to assimilate into America—and one cannot help but be deeply moved by the artist’s steadfast determination to act as a bridge and pass these narratives down to her children. Ultimately, her work creates a profound sense of presence, as though those ancestors are right there in the room with us, perhaps guiding our way. It is this powerful convergence of personal history, artistic intention, and spiritual connection that makes her photography so deeply transformative.”
—Hideko Kataoka, Newsweek Japan

Each year the Daylight Photo Awards invites leading industry professionals to review the work of contest entries. They are asked to rank all entries from which there emerges one winner of a $2500 cash prize and, also, highlight their personal favorite portfolio or ‘Juror Pick’.
