“That’s not a pretty girl sport.”

During a stay at a hotel flooded by female athletes for one of my daughter’s volleyball tournaments, a young girl was overheard expressing her wishes to play basketball, yet her excitement and desire was immediately shut down by her own father because it was not a “pretty girl sport.” What’s even more mind-boggling than the statement itself, is that this father seemed to believe it was a useful compliment to his daughter, because being pretty–even at the expense of her true nature–would serve her more in life. Her brother agreed, and began suggesting other sports like track where she could show off her long legs.

Three years ago this fall I released my book Girlhood: Lost And Found with @daylightbooks , and clearly the conversation is far from over.

The book explores the experience females face growing up and growing old in a world full of preconceived notions of what it means to be a woman. The selection of photos included here travel back in time to dance between both mine and my daughter’s parallel girlhoods, grapple with the time in my life I spent working in the beauty industry in front of the camera, and reckon with the aging process and how to do it proudly and peacefully in a world that prefers our faces be frozen in emotionless complicity when in fact we need signs of humanity and feminine compassion, rage, and love expressed more freely than ever.

Can you pinpoint the moment you first learned that being pretty was a direct determination of your worth? Or that your own unique, natural beauty was not enough? Think about all you may have invested in the chase–all based on false truths spewed by fear mongers. Why should we accept their toxic messaging as true, and what else could we be doing with all that time, money, and energy?

What would you do if you didn’t have to do it pretty?

I am so grateful to @alyiarrusso and @covefinejewelry for inviting me to be part of this incredible photo shoot celebrating female entrepreneurs paving their own unique paths. Many thanks for photography by @hhaseltinephotography , styling @storyworthystyles ,and wardrobe @ginabespoke .

Happy 3rd birthday Girlhood: Lost and Found!

🎉 It's a thrill and an honor to be included in this first round of talent, I couldn't be happier to be included.

My beloved series that started out as a happy accident, and 12 summers later is still going strong, like a slow burn gaining traction over the years. I selected a few favorites ranging from 2017-2025 and I'm aboslsuglrt delighted the jurors felt the same about them.

A huge congratulations to my fellow Top 200 finalists, a thank you to people at @photolucida and all the jurors and their time spent evaluating hundreds of submissions. Wish me luck for Top 50🤞
