donna tartt, the woman you are 🤎

now that i’ve read all her novels my life is completed!
her books were always like a constant star in my photos and they always were present, that just shows how much of an impact they had on me
i wish donna published more novels but i respect her choice of prioritizing quality over quantity and it shows.

i read her books in a certain order that i wouldn’t really recommend lol so this is how i’d her books for the first time:

-i’d start with The Goldfinch: simply because it was such a gripping page turner and a smooth read, although it narrates very traumatic experiences.
style aside, the story is heart breaking, very inspiring, easy to follow and such beautiful and well thought characters

-then i’d go with The Secret History: after reading them all, this novel still holds the first place for me for so many reasons.
this book got me into reading and into loving psychological intriguing plots, especially those which observe how people behave when they are in a group of troubled persons ( in fact after the secret history i read if we were villains and the atlas six)
going back to the book, idk if it was the vibe of bookstagram 2022 that made it so special but it is really one of the best book ever written (hot take maybe but idc)

-last but not least, i’d go with the little friend: many people didn’t like this book which is normal i think since it’s very peculiar in a sense, it’s different from the other two but if you ask me what’s different i wouldn’t be able to point it out.
i feel like anyone who has read them might understand me lol but for those who haven’t, i’d keep this novel last because i feel like it’s more mature, very complicated and deeply challenging also because it’s a very slowwww burn.
some found it boring for this reason, but i remember enjoy it so much!

anyway, her novels are characterized by being multilayered and deeply meaningful while portraying characters who all share the burden of carrying a secret or the consequences of a life changing and dramatic event by @dbenreads

albert camus - the plague

first thing i wanna say is that i wish i read this book sooner!!

anyway, the novel revolves around the story of the out break of a plague in a port city named Oran.
Oran is firstly described as a vibrant and lively city where people live their daily lives peacefully until the plague took over and forced people to live under a strict quarantine, face isolation, suffering and the silent indifference of the world (sounds familiar ik).

as we know, Camus is a brilliant novelist and phlisopher so the story is not as “superficial” as it seems, in fact it was so interesting to notice the different behaviours from each character during the plague.
Some gave up, some became more selfish while a minor part decided to keep fighting.
Dr Rieux, Jean Tarrou, and local volunteers form sanitation squads to treat the sick, despite failing initial serums and rising death tolls.

This fight has so much meaning if we look up when Camus wrote this novel and on the back of the cover of the penguin modern classic it is clearly stated that it was just after the Nazi occupation of France during WW2.
on one hand, Camus wanted to compare the plague with the Nazi totalitarianism, and on the other he wanted to underline the absurdity of life.
disasters strike innocent people every day and, as i’ve seen in this novel as well, people tend to turn the other cheek when it comes to the suffering of others while paradoxically screaming for help when they are the ones suffering.

this book made me realize how much we are detached from reality and how we tend to forget that the “plague” has not disappeared, as dr Rieux believes as well.
we’re just waiting for the next tragedy while ignoring others, but that’s just my thoughts on the matter.

personally, i really loved it and i recommend it to you guys if you want to start reading Camus!!
this is my second novel of his and i cannot wait to dive even more in his works!

hope you have an amazing day!

hiii everyone,

here’s a Dostoevskij appreciation post since i’ve been reading crime and punishment these last few days and i’ve been loving it!!!
no spoilers though i’ll make a revieww.

Dostoevskij is definitely one of those authors that everyone needs to read and i couldn’t agree more for two reasons:
1) because he’s Russian and taking a deep dive into a different kinds of literature is always educational
2) because he’s Dostoevskij !!
jokes aside he explores the human mind so deeply like no one does.
his novels combine gripping stories with profound questions about morality, freedom, guilt, faith, and the contradictions of human nature.
(i cannot wait to read “the idiot” next, if someone’s read it let me knoww!)

anyway here are 3 novellas that are an excellent introduction to Dostoevskij because each reveals a different side of his writing while staying relatively short.

-White Nights is the most accessible. A touching story about loneliness, hope, and unfulfilled love, it introduces Dostoevskij’s empathy and emotional depth.

-The Double is darker and more psychological. Through the story of a man haunted by his double, it explores identity, insecurity, and madness.

-Notes from Underground is his first great philosophical work. The Underground Man’s reflections on free will, suffering, and human nature anticipate the ideas developed in his major novels.

a great reading order is White Nights → The Double → Notes from Underground.
all together, the let you step into Dostoevskij’s style before moving on to masterpieces like Crime and Punishment.

have you read any of these novellas? by @dbenreads

books that shaped me 🤞🏻🤎

when i thought of this concept/trend my mind went through a different dimension trying to pick a few books that really shaped me and it took so much time bc i feel like every book leaves something otherwise we wouldn’t read at all…

HOWEVER i think i managed to narrow it down to a few (i might do a second part tho)

- Frankenstein: will forever and ever be my numeber 1 favorite novel, it taught me that loneliness can be just as destructive as ambition and that villains are made not born

-No Longer Human: it showed me what it feels like to wear a mask for the world, a mask that was familiar to me

- The Outsider: made me question whether meaning comes from life itself or from the stories we tell about it, it was such an interesting novel it left a significant mark on me
- Animal Farm: the one and only novel that i name on a daily basis, it reminded me how easily power can rewrite truth

-Letter to His Father: loved it because kafka was able to put into words the weight that family, silence, and expectation can carry, it felt like listening to a friend who needed to get that something off his chest.

-If we were villains: it introduced me to dark academia and it’s still nowadays my favorite setting, loved how the author conveyed how balance is required in life in any aspect of it

I cannot recommend these books enough!!
hope you all have an amazing day ❤️

what if TSH was told from Bunny’s point of view instead of Richard’s? 🤎

years ago i read this question somewhere and it did something to me
i think the whole story would feel very different. I remember that Richard sees Henry, Camilla, Charles, and Francis as mysterious and fascinating. He almost worships them, so their world feels beautiful and dramatic, almost like something from a Greek tragedy.
but from Bunny’s point of view, the group might look very different.
instead of seeming impressive, they might just seem like a bunch of rich, strange students who take their Greek class way too seriously. Henry might feel less like a genius and more like someone who is cold and a little creepy, which was exactly what i thought too, especially towards the end.
all their talk about ancient rituals and Greek ideas might even sound a bit ridiculous.
the tone of the story would probably change too. Bunny is sarcastic, loud, and always joking or complaining.
because of that, the book might have more dark humor. instead of Richard’s dreamy descriptions, we would probably get more blunt intrusive thoughts and funny or criticizing comments about the people around him.

it would also make the story tense in a different way. Bunny slowly realizes that the others are hiding something terrible about what happened during their secret ritual.
at first he jokes about it and teases them, but little by little he starts to understand that the others are afraid of him because he knows the truth.
i think that would make the story even more tragic.
we would watch Bunny push them further and further without fully realizing how dangerous the situation is, while the reader can already see what might happen to him.

what do you guys think?? tsh remains for me the only book ever written iykyk
see you soon <33
