Things In Every Room by Helen Longstreth

In Longstreth’s memoir, she delves deep into the complexities of growing up in a home under the shadow of alcoholism. In a poignant recounting of her childhood, she explores the confusion of a child trying to make sense of what they see through the limited understanding they had at the time, while grappling with the contradiction of loving your father while hating what you see.

The author’s writing will hook you in with its beautiful yet quietly devastating passages. I remember starting this book in a coffee shop and reading the first few chapters, and having that strange feeling of recognition as I encountered experiences and emotions that, in some ways, felt familiar to me. There was something about the way Longstreth captures a child’s perspective that hit close to home.

Somehow, this reminded me of Francie Nolan from Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Francie Nolan was a bravehearted child who faced hardships far beyond what a child should have to carry, yet continued to find ways to understand, endure, and make a life out of what she was given. What stayed with me most was the way the memoir captures the complicated nature of childhood: how a child can love someone deeply while simultaneously being hurt by who that person is, and how those contradictions can coexist in the same home.

Thank you @jonathancapebooks for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

~ Mid year freak out tag ~

6 months have passed already and it’s already July so here is a little recap of my reading year. Well, first of all, let’s say I’m very proud of myself to finally compete my reading goal because at first I thought maybe it’s not gonna be my year for when it comes to reading since in the first few months, I’ve barely read anything but watched shows and movies but I pulled through I guess. So cheers to that.
As of the moment, even though I’ve just finished a duology two days ago, I’m currently listening to an audiobook so that’s that.

🌺 Reading goal
- 50/50 books
Very proud of this one and maybe because I read the spy x family in January in one week so I guess that helped a bit. Little context was that I spoiled myself from the series then binged the whole series.

🌺Bookish stats
- got this is from StoryGraph and I’m not gonna explain it further since it’s already explained somehow in the pictures 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

🌺 favorite books so far this year
- heartless hunter
- sunrise on the reaping
- one dark window
- happy place
- like wind on a dry branch
- first time caller

There is no ranking for this part but these are the books that stood out to me this year 👏🏻👏🏻

🌺 Books that were not my cup of tea
- wings of wicked
- blood so brutal
- the reaper
- magnolia parks
- deep end

Context is that, you could say it was one bad book to another, again and again. This books had put me into a reading slump for real and I was struggled since when I finished a book from this tag/section then it as another bad book so I was in not the right mood but still ended up hating it though 😭💀😐

🌺 Books from my tbr
- this time is real
- the death of Vivek Okk
- yolk
- for the wolf
- one golden summer
- cassandra

Now this list is a mix from my 2025 tbr and some that I actually want to read as soon as I can. Then I wanted to have like different genres so I could choose depending on my mood.

Anyways that’s it for this tag! Let me know your favorite reads this year! Would love to hear your thoughts as well.

brothers and ghosts by khuê pham
rating: ★★★★☆ (4 stars)

brothers and ghosts follows khuê pham—more commonly known as kim—a german-born daughter of vietnamese immigrants. for most of her life, khuê naturally became more familiar with its culture rather than the heritage of her parents. their quiet life in germany shifts course when she receives an unexpected message from her estranged uncle in america, drawing her into a past she barely knows. with estranged relatives and a will from her late grandmother, khuê must face the generational trauma, old wounds, and the personal silence that has existed in her family for decades and unravel what tore the family apart. told from a layered narrative, the story moves between past and present, seamlessly stitching together fragments of memory and history.

reading about one of the many hardships that millions of vietnamese families have lived through was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. it’s a collective history of trauma, displacement, conflicting ideologies, survival, and the lingering shadows of a war that changed everything. these are scars that last generations, mirroring the larger, painful divisions within vietnamese society itself.

i find khue pham’s writing to be gentle yet impactful. from the very first page, i was gripped by her every word and how she delivers emotions without forcing it. as someone who isn’t vietnamese, i still found so many moments that hits close to home things that resonated with my own life like how i’ve left behind my childhood home to move to the city for higher education and how leaving is knowing that you won’t come back as the same person.

by the end, i was surprised to find myself close to tears. brothers and ghost is not just a story about family conflict, the aftermath of war, or being caught in two worlds while feeling disconnected from both. rather, it’s a tribute to the resilience of families caught in the crossfire of history and to the ongoing process of understanding and accepting one’s roots.

thank you @scribepub for sending me a copy. it was an enlightening experience ❤️

~ Do we have the same book taste? ~

You can never be too late with this kind of tag, I did this a while back and I’m gonna do it again since my book taste changes over time! So here are the books that resonate with me. I think this would be the randomness combination of books that I ever did.

Back on this feed after a whole year—did you miss me, or did the algorithm forget I exist?

Kinda feeling the FOMO, but also not sure if I’ll actually be consistent this time (let’s be real, probably not). But hey, I’ll try to stick around.

Hope you’re all doing great and not just hoarding books you’ll never read (like me).

What’s your current read?

I’m reading What Would Audrey Do?—because honestly, I need some life advice."

~ Surrounded by history, art, and beauty ~

Nothing much happened but went to three different museums this month! So this is kind of like a museum dump post. I have a lot of pics but these are my favorites!

Plus, when it comes to books, I’ve only started reading like a week ago so it’s me and my manga these days. I’m currently reading spy x family and I’m reading volume 6. Also I’m currently watching a k-drama called love next door and I’m loving it! 🏛️☕️💐💌

💌 which anime/show has recently piqued your interest?

i genuinely loved watching violet evargarden. if you are a girly who likes to watch/read healing and growth of a person and how the after effects of a war affects a person then this show is for you. i remember stumbling upon it not expecting to fall in love with the show.

also for today’s post, i tried editing a bit differently cuz I’ve been watching so many of you make these cute little posts with doodles so i gave it a try. hopefully you’ll like it!! ✨
